CFS associate research professor receives AAIDD Service to the Association Award

Elizabeth Perkins, PhD, Department of Child and Family Studies (CFS) associate research professor, has been awarded the Service to the Association Award from the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD). This award honors individuals, organizations, and media who have made outstanding contributions to the field. AAIDD was founded in 1876 and is the oldest and largest interdisciplinary membership organization of professionals and others concerned about intellectual and developmental disabilities. Perkins, who also serves as the associate director of the Florida Center for Inclusive Communities at USF, has been a highly active member of AAIDD for nearly 20 years.

Aging studies associate professor hosts podcast episode on moral distress for health care workers

Debra Dobbs, PhD, associate professor in the School of Aging Studies, hosted a new podcast episode for the Social Research Policy and Practice Section of the Gerontological Society of America. In the episode titled "'What Keeps Me Awake at Night': Moral Distress in Long-Term Care Employees," Dobbs leads a discussion with guests Ozcan Tunalilar, PhD and Elizabeth Galik, PhD, CRNP, FAAN, FAANP on direct care staff issues of moral distress during COVID in assisted living and nursing homes. It is the second episode in the series on workforce issues in long term care.

Dae Sheridan Fall 2022 Commencement

Former instructor creates a lasting legacy with endowed scholarship in CRMHC


After 15 years as an instructor in the Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling (CRMHC) program, Dae Sheridan’s name will continue to be recognized by faculty, students, and staff in CRMHC forever. Sheridan, PhD, LMHC, CRC, along with her husband Scott, recently established the Dr. Dae Sheridan Endowed Scholarship to support CRMHC students. Their gift, which includes $25,000 to fund an endowment and $5,000 in support while the endowment grows, will provide scholarships to full- or part-time graduate students pursuing a CRMHC major. CARD and ABA rotary gift check presentation

Tampa Midtown Rotary Club Presents $22,000 to CARD-USF and ABA program


The Tampa Midtown Rotary Club presented $22,000 to the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities at USF (CARD-USF) and the USF Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) program. The money was raised during their 11th Annual Cycling for Autism held in October 2022. The check presentation was held at the monthly Midtown Rotary meeting on Jan. 12, where Rotarians, 2022 sponsors, and USF representatives celebrated the success of the event. Read more.

CFS professor presents research on teaching safety skills to children


Raymond Miltenberger, PhD, BCBA-D, professor in the Department of Child and Family Studies (CFS), presented his research as part of the Pints of Science Quarterly Lecture Series at New World Music Hall. His presentation, "How to Prevent a Parent's Worst Nightmare," discussed what works and doesn't work to keep children safe from guns. Miltenberger is currently the director of the Applied Behavior Analysis program, and his research in applied behavior analysis focuses on teaching safety skills to children and individuals with disabilities.

The need for mental health services globally is unprecedented, especially in the context of the COVID-19

pandemic. Yet most people in both high- and low-resource

settings in need of mental health services go without,

creating a mental health "service gap." The field of global

mental health is dedicated to closing that gap. Jerome Galea, PhD, LCSW, RCSWI, assistant professor in the USF School of Social Work, will speak about integrated HIV and mental health care in the context of increasing access to evidence-based mental health services for all.

Jung Kwak, PhD, MSW, FGSA is a graduate from the Ph.D. in Aging Studies Program at University of South Florida. Her program of research focuses on improving access to and quality of long- term and palliative care that is more inclusive and equitable for older adults living with dementia and their care partners. Kwak teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on ethics of healthcare and on end-of-life care, and was a recent recipient of the Texas 10 Award recognizing professors who have enriched the lives of their students.
