USF campuses closed for severe weather


All campuses are closed today, Monday, Oct. 7, with business operations continuing remotely and classes to be delivered asynchronously. On Tuesday, Oct. 8, and Wednesday, Oct. 9, all classes are canceled and all campuses will remain closed. A decision about reopening campuses, resuming classes, and returning to normal business operations for Thursday, Oct. 10 will be made at a later time. Mayaan Lawental

Social work assistant professor of instruction to serve as chair of Faculty Council on Student Admissions


Mayaan Lawental, PhD, MSW, an assistant professor of instruction in the School of Social Work, has been elected chair of the USF Faculty Council on Student Admissions. This council advises the provost and senior vice president for USF Health or their designees on matters pertaining to the establishment and maintenance of policies, principles, and regulations affecting the selection and admission of undergraduate students to USF. Council representatives include faculty, administrators, staff, and students. Lawental will also attend the general USF Senate meetings and serve in this role until 2026.

Documentary featuring USF students wins Best Feature at arts and film festival


A documentary based on students' experiences during a five-day trip to historic sites on the Civil Rights Trail was named Best Feature Documentary at the Juneteenth Arts & Film Festival in Lakeland held on Sept. 28. As part of the trip, criminology, social work, and psychology students visited Birmingham, Selma, and Montgomery, Alabama, and explored the historical, social and psychological aspects of this pivotal era in American history. The trip was led by Distinguished University Professor Emerita Kathleen Heide, PhD; Elizabeth Hordge-Freeman, PhD; and graduate assistant Nicky Luckett, MEd. USF alumna Ta'Bria Snowden was the documentary's cinematographer.

KELSEY GREENFIELD

BCS student admitted to doctoral candidacy


Kelsey Greenfield, JD, has been admitted to doctoral candidacy in the Behavioral and Community Sciences (BCS) PhD program. She has a JD from the University of Florida and a BA in Psychology from the University of Richmond. Her research interests include mental health, substance use, co-occurring disorders, criminal justice, and program evaluation.

USF researchers granted access to federal data through Florida Research Data Center network


USF has joined the Florida Research Data Center (FLRDC) network, enabling the university's researchers to access detailed protected data gathered by the U.S. Census Bureau and 15 other federal agencies. The data is stored in a secure lab at the Florida Federal Statistical Research Data Center on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, but some agency data, including datasets from the U.S. Census Bureau, can be accessed remotely. PACT Study

Volunteers age 65+ needed for study on preventing Alzheimer's disease


The Preventing Alzheimer's with Cognitive Training (PACT) team is recruiting volunteers to participate in their research study to see if computerized training exercises reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Interested adults who are 65 years or older, do not have any neurological disorders, have not had a stroke or brain injury, and do not have mild cognitive impairment or dementia, should visit www.PACTstudy.org for more information.
