MHLP assistant professor participates in HCFR Clinician Awareness Training

Kristin Kosyluk

Kristin Kosyluk, PhD, an assistant professor in the Department of Mental Health Law and Policy (MHLP), participated in the Hillsborough County Fire Rescue (HCFR) Clinician Awareness Training. Kosyluk practiced extricating a vehicle and crawled in full gear through a simulated structure fire. Kosyluk participated because of the research she has done on first responder mental health and stigma.

MFT program welcomes new faculty member

Everette Coffman, PhD, has been selected and hired as an assistant professor of instruction and field placement coordinator of the Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) program. Coffman has been working with the MFT program since fall 2021 as a postdoc fellow and visiting faculty and is well versed in the program mission and goals. Coffman has been described by MFT faculty as "a talented therapist, teacher, researcher, and supervisor," and they are excited to have him join as a permanent member of the faculty.

CRMHC celebrates fall 2023 graduates


The Department of Child and Family Studies recently celebrated the fall 2023 class of the Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling (CRMHC) program. The graduates completed the 60-credit-hour program with 900 hours of fieldwork in the community. Among the graduates, six completed an additional Marriage and Family Therapy Certificate and five completed an Addictions and Substance Abuse Counseling Certificate. Read more.

Criminology assistant professor of instruction weighs in on Adelson case in Tallahassee


Thomas Hyslip, PhD, an assistant professor of instruction in the Department of Criminology who also served as a federal law enforcement officer for over 23 years, joined other experts to discuss whether digital forensics could impact the case against Donna Adelson. Adelson recently appeared in a Tallahassee courtroom to hear the charges levied against her, including murder, in the conspiracy to kill her ex-son-in-law, FSU Law Professor Dan Markel. Watch the video.

BLLING members volunteer at Achieve Tampa Bay

BLLING members volunteer at local school to improve students' bilingual literacy


Members of the Bilingual Language and Literacy Investigative Networking Group (BLLING) volunteered at Achieve Plant City to read Turkey Trouble and lead a hands-on activity with elementary students. The children disguised a paper turkey as either a princess, cupcake, gumball machine, or superhero. The purpose of the activity was to implement a bilingual language- and literacy-based activity for the kids at their after-school program. BLLING supports the community by hosting events aimed at increasing awareness of bilingual and biliteracy issues.

CSD PhD student presents at premier neuroscience conference


Dimitri Brunelle, a PhD student in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD), presented his poster, “Age-induced modulation in sound-evoked local field potentials in the inferior colliculus of CBA/CaJ mice,” at Society for Neuroscience (SfN) and Advances and Perspectives in Auditory Neuroscience (APAN) in Washington D.C. SfN is the premier neuroscience conference in the world, with over 25,000 attendees this year, spanning the entire field of neuroscience. Read more.

The team is seeking storytellers with a 5-minute story to share about their lived experience with mental health and/or substance use conditions via poetry, original music, comedy, essay, dance or other artistic expression. The show will be live on stage this spring on April 5, 2024.
