CFS research associate selected as APBS board member

Stephanie Martinez

Research Associate Stephanie Martinez, PhD, has been selected to serve as a board member of the Association for Positive Behavior Support (APBS). APBS is comprised of over 1,000 professionals, family members, and consumers committed to the application of positive behavior support within the context of family, school, and community. Dr. Martinez's three-year term will begin this April. Read more here.

BCS doctoral student presents at Annual Graduate Student Research Symposium


Last Thursday and Friday, the Office of Graduate Studies, the Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate, and the Graduate and Professional Student Council hosted the Annual Graduate Student Research Symposium in a hybrid fashion. Tram Hoang Huyen Tran presented her research "Substance Use Among Methadone Patients in Vietnam: A Systematic Review" on Thursday, March 24, 2022 from 3-4:30 p.m. Tram is a Behavioral and Community Sciences PhD candidate and a former Fulbright NIDA Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow (2017-2018). Her research areas include substance abuse disorders and mental illness in developing countries, especially on program evaluations, drug-related policies, peer-based support interventions, and women with substance use disorders.


"Presenting at the Annual Graduate Student Research Symposium 2022 was a wonderful experience for me because not only was I able to share my research work with other students and faculty, but I also learned about other students' research with a diversity of areas and topics," said Tran. "I feel fortunate to be a part of a community where students are passionate, dynamic, and committed to advancing knowledge in their fields."

ITRE receives 3rd consecutive 5-year grant from National Institutes of Health – National Institute on Drug Abuse


The Institute for Translational Research Education in Adolescent Drug Abuse (ITRE) has been funded for a 3rd consecutive 5-year grant by the National Institutes of Health – National Institute on Drug Abuse. The $1,750,000 grant is led by Co-Principal Investigators Tom Massey, PhD and Bruce Lubotsky Levin, DrPH, and Co-Investigators Donna Burton, PhD and Ardis Hanson, PhD. The mission of the ITRE is to develop, cultivate, and disseminate an innovative model of research education that addresses best practices for translational research in adolescent substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Through a generous gift from the Evin B. Harsell Foundation, the Florida Center for Inclusive Communities (FCIC/UCEDD) is proud to offer trainees a scholarship opportunity for those living with disabilities or focusing their studies on the field of disability.


The Evan B. Hartsell Endowed Memorial Scholarship is open to full or part-time students at the sophomore, junior, senior or graduate academic levels. Applicants must be active trainees of FCIC/UCEDD and pursing a major in Social Work or Counseling in the College of Behavioral & Community Sciences or Psychology in the College of Arts & Sciences, on any of the USF campuses.

PBS Grad Certificate

Want to learn how to address challenging behavior in children and adolescents? Consider a Graduate Certificate in Positive Behavior Support.


The University of South Florida and the Florida Center for Inclusive Communities offer a fully online Graduate Certificate in Positive Behavior Support (PBS). This 12 credit hour course of study prepares individuals from mental health, school psychology, school administration, education, early education, social work, and related fields to be effective members of the school, early childhood, or individual support team implementing PBS. The program includes classes focused on providing consultation and guiding collaboration, implementing school-wide PBS, addressing behavior challenges in young children, and intensive individualized interventions.
