Criminology assistant professor of instruction shares cybercrime expertise in new podcast episode

Tom Hyslip, PhD, assistant professor of instruction in the Department of Criminology, joined host Michael Joyce for the 80th episode of the Cybercrimeology podcast to talk about academia, digital forensics, and cybercrime analysis. In the episode, "At the Speed of Cyber: Criminal Investigations and Research," Hyslip discusses his investigative work in cybercrime, the complexities surrounding prosecution for cybercrime, and the evolution of the field.

CFS professor to serve as member of NHLBI Single-Site and Pilot Clinical Trials Study Section

Dr. Marilyn Stern

Marilyn Stern, PhD, CRC, professor in the Department of Child and Family Studies (CFS), was invited by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to serve as a standing member of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Single-Site and Pilot Clinical Trials Study Section, Heart, Lung, and Blood Initial Review Group. She will serve a four-year term beginning in July. Stern served for years as an AdHoc member on several different NIH study sections.

GSA leaders share the importance of professional societies


Leaders from the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) visited the USF School of Aging Studies this week to meet with faculty and doctoral students. As part of a presentation to the group, James Appleby, MPH, ScD (Hon), chief executive officer of GSA, and Jim Nelson, PhD, FGSA, president of GSA, shared their insights about the importance of professional societies in advancing aging research. In addition, they explained how scholars can become involved with the upcoming GSA Annual Scientific Meeting that will be held in Tampa this Nov. 8-12. Read more.

CBCS employees celebrated for reaching career milestones at USF


Faculty and staff from across the college gathered in the MHC Atrium Thursday afternoon to celebrate those who have reached significant milestones in their career at USF. Dean Julie Serovich, PhD gave a presentation and led rounds of trivia for the honorees. Read the full list of awardees here.

Multiple faculty members receive grants for interdisciplinary research projects


Multiple CBCS faculty were selected by the USF Research Advisory Board to receive the Interdisciplinary Research Grant, which supports collaborative research projects. This grant aims to leverage the faculty talent across the university's research enterprise and lead them to external funding. The selected submissions reflect the highly collaborative nature of USF faculty, and in CBCS, the recipients of the $20,000 grant represent the Department of Criminology and the School of Social Work. USF program aims to expand pipeline of addiction researchers from underrepresented backgrounds


With significant racial gaps in research across the country, Micah Johnson, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Mental Health Law and Policy, is leading a program that encourages students from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds to explore careers in addiction research and biomedical sciences – an initiative essential to creating a diverse workforce and mitigating existing health disparities, such as the opioid crisis. Funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the Substance Misuse and Addiction Research Traineeship offers undergraduate students a hands-on research opportunity to advance science on the causes of drug use, prevention and treatment of substance use disorders, and advance research on underrepresented communities who experience disproportionate consequences of drug use. CBCS researchers awarded travel grants


Child and Family Studies Professor Christina Dillahunt-Aspillaga, PhD and School of Aging Studies Associate Professor Debra Dobbs, PhD were selected to receive International Travel Grants from USF Research and Innovation. These grants support USF faculty to attend major international professional meetings and conferences and give keynote speeches, presentations, or performances. Dillahunt-Aspillaga will travel to Dublin, Ireland, and Dobbs will travel to Padova, Italy. CRMHC career fair connects students with future employers


The Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling (CRMHC) program recently hosted its annual Field Placement and Employment Fair – a forum where CRMHC's community partners can table and meet students who may be interested in being placed at their site for practicum or internship. The event gave students the opportunity to learn about each agency and potential employment opportunities. Agencies simultaneously had the opportunity to recruit students who may be the best fit for their site. Read more.

Seeking: Caregivers of Individuals with Disabilities


Caregivers of individuals between the ages of 3 and 22 years with intellectual or developmental disabilities who live in Florida are invited to participate in a research study on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on services for children and adolescents with I/DD. This survey is part of a more extensive project to examine the effects of COVID-19 pandemic on services provided to youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Specifically, this study looks at service access prior to, during, and after the height of the pandemic. This research can help in the development of future programs and policy surrounding the pandemic and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Jung Kwak, PhD, MSW, FGSA is a graduate of the PhD in Aging Studies Program at USF. Her program of research focuses on improving access to and quality of long-term and palliative care that is more inclusive and equitable for older adults living with dementia and their care partners. Kwak teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on ethics of healthcare and on end-of-life care and was a recent recipient of the Texas 10 Award recognizing professors who have enriched the lives of their students.

Ernest Gonzales, PhD, MSSW is a first-gen Latinx gerontologist who is a scholar in the areas of productive aging, health equity, discrimination, and social policy. His research advances our understanding of the relationships between healthy aging, social determinants of health, productive activities, and intergenerational contexts. Gonzales' work is supported by many funders, including the National Institute on Aging, the U.S. Social Security Administration, and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, and is published in leading scientific journals.
