CFS associate professor awarded funding from The Corridor Early-Stage Innovation Fund | |
Matthew Foster, PhD, an associate professor in the Department of Child and Family Studies (CFS), has been awarded $25,000 from The Corridor Early-Stage Innovation Fund. Foster was selected by the Florida High Tech Corridor and USF Research & Innovation. His project, "Equipping Bilingual Leaders for Special Education Related Careers," is also supported by CBCS faculty M. Adelaida Restrepo, PhD, and Maria Carlo, PhD, and the College of Education's Lisa Lopez, PhD.

School of Social Work director celebrates retirement | |
CBCS faculty, staff, and students gathered in the MHC Atrium to celebrate Riaan van Zyl, PhD, who will retire this month. The event included a panel, wherein van Zyl was joined by Jim Clark, PhD, MSW, Florida State University (FSU) provost and former dean of the FSU College of Social Work, and Bruce Thyer, PhD, LCSW, BCBA-D, FSU Distinguished Research Professor. The three speakers, who have been friends and colleagues for over 30 years, provided commentary on the state of social work research and practice.

Behavioral and Community Sciences PhD students present at APA conference
Doctoral students Brooke Haney (pictured) and Emilie Ellenberg, MA, presented at this year's American Psychological Association (APA) conference. Haney presented on "Effectiveness of Drug Court as a Substance Use Treatment for Violent Offenders: A Systematic Review."
Ellenberg presented her research, "Accessing Behavioral Health Services as Learned Behavior: A Qualitative, Community-Engaged Research Study." Read more.

Students continue social work studies in USF's PhD program
Two USF Master of Social Work graduates returned to the School of Social Work to continue their education in the PhD program. Emma "Rose" Stevenson is interested in researching treatment for individuals who have engaged in inappropriate or abusive sexual behaviors, treatment needs for special populations of sex offenders, and strategies to improve successful reintegration for returning citizens. Karah Greene is interested in researching health disparities and systemic problems faced by key populations. Read more.

Volunteers age 65+ needed for study on preventing Alzheimer's disease
The Preventing Alzheimer's with Cognitive Training (PACT) team is recruiting volunteers to participate in their research study to see if computerized training exercises reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Interested adults who are 65 years or older, do not have any neurological disorders, have not had a stroke or brain injury, and do not have mild cognitive impairment or dementia, should visit www.PACTstudy.org for more information.

LAUNCH is recruiting peer mentors for the upcoming academic year. This role offers the opportunity to gain experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and develop leadership skills. This unpaid position can be used for academic credit or internship/practicum hours, if applicable. The start date is the first week of classes, and mentors must attend an orientation Aug. 22. The Prevent-Teach-Reinforce (PTR) Model Training facilitated by Rose Iovannone, PhD, BDBA-D, is an eight-hour training divided into two parts, offered on two different days. The trainings cover the PTR Model, research supporting its efficacy, and the five steps of the PTR process. Organizers recommend that individuals attend the entire training on both days. RSVP by Sept. 9.
