Kyaien Conner, PhD, LSW, MPH, assistant professor in the Department of Mental Health Law and Policy, received the Distinguished Alumni Award in the area of Social Work Innovation from the University of Pittsburgh. According to the Pitt School of Social Work website, this award recognizes alumni who have "achieved the highest standards of professional integrity and personal conduct; advanced knowledge of the profession; and supported public and social policies that ensure equal rights for all regardless of race, ethnicity, creed, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, income or disability." Conner earned her BA, BS, MSW, MPH, and PhD at the University of Pittsburgh.

New chair selected for online MSW program | |
David Kilmnick, PhD, MSW, has been selected as the new Master of Social Work (MSW) program chair and will join the School of Social Work faculty in December. Kilmnick is a leading national advocate within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities and is the founder and president/CEO of the New York LGBT Network. Over the last 30 years, Kilmnick has worked tirelessly to end homophobia and transphobia by building successful non-profit organizations that support and advocate for the LGBT communities in Long Island and New York City.

School of Social Work hosts voter registration drive
Jamie Clem, MSW, PhD, RSY, an assistant professor of instruction in the School of Social Work, recently led an initiative to encourage USF students to vote in the upcoming election. Outside of the MHC atrium, social work students manned a voter registration table covered with educational resources and registration forms. Multiple students stopped to grab informative materials about the candidates running for office and others registered to vote.

Criminology associate professor discusses research and advocacy in new podcast episode
Bryanna Fox, PhD, an associate professor in the Department of Criminology, recently spoke on the College of Public Health Activist Lab's "Advocation - Change It Up!" podcast to talk about the Center for Justice Research and Policy. As one of the directors of the lab, Fox discussed the development of the center, examples of programs, and how to be an advocate for change. The Center for Justice Research and Policy focuses on the study of crime, violence, and criminal and social justice policy. Members of the center work to develop and apply research in order to enhance the evidence base of policing, corrections, and court practices. Listen to the episode.

CARD-USF receives $25,000 donation at Fiesta by the Bay
Over 200 people attended the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities at USF's (CARD-USF) annual Fiesta by the Bay fundraising event held Oct. 7 at the Glazer Children’s Museum, where a surprise $25,000 gift was presented from an anonymous long-time CARD Champion. Museum activities, dancing, food, and an auction rounded out the evening's festivities. CARD-USF provides communities, organizations, agencies, service providers, and families with the knowledge and skills to support children and adults with autism and related disabilities. Support is also provided to early intervention, schools, employers, and colleges and universities. Read more.

Social work PhD student named AHEC Scholar
Stephanie Rosado, MSW, CWHC, a PhD student in the School of Social Work, has been accepted into the Florida Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Scholars Program for the 2022-2024 cohort. The Florida AHEC Scholars program will provide Rosado with opportunities to enhance her knowledge and skills beyond the traditional classroom to better prepare her as a future social work scholar in her research area of osteoporosis and its impact on the quality of life and well-being of young adults. This year’s application pool was highly competitive, and Rosado was one of 150 interdisciplinary health profession students accepted into the cohort. Read more.
