Aging studies associate professor awarded by Florida High Tech Corridor

Hongdao Meng, MD, MPH, PhD, associate professor in the School of Aging Studies, has been selected to receive $25,000 from The Corridor Early-Stage Innovation Fund to support his latest research titled, "Computer Vision-Based Human Affect Assessment System for Precision Music." In partnership with Florida High Tech Corridor and USF Research & Innovation, the fund supports early-stage innovations and applied research by USF faculty that have commercial potential and lead to industry investment, startup creation, or licensing opportunities.

Criminology associate professor nationally recognized for outstanding mentorship

Ráchael Powers, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Criminology, received the Outstanding Mentor Award from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. This award recognizes faculty who have made significant contributions to the development of graduate students and junior faculty members in the field of criminal justice. Powers is one of just six honorees from across the country.

Aging studies alumna returns as distinguished lecturer


Jung Kwak, PhD, MSW, FGSA, associate professor at the School of Nursing at the University of Texas at Austin, visited USF's Tampa campus to present “Integrating Social Care and Caregiver Support in Hospital Settings” as part of the School of Aging Studies and Florida Policy Exchange Center on Aging Distinguished Alumni Lecture series. Kwak is a graduate of the Ph.D. in Aging Studies Program at USF. Read more.

BSW Meet and Greet

School of Social Work hosts meet and greet for BSW students


First- and second-semester students in the Bachelor of Social Work program had the chance Friday afternoon to network with other students and meet program faculty. While enjoying pizza, salad, and granola bars, first-semester students were able to get advice from second-semester students and get to know their faculty outside of the classroom. A representative from Early Steps gave a presentation to the group and shared opportunities for field experience at their facility on campus.

The Norwegian Centre for Violence and Traumatic Stress Studies will examine the effectiveness of Stepping Together for Children after Trauma (Stepping Together-CT), a treatment for childhood post-traumatic stress, compared to treatment as usual in the municipal mental health teams in Norway. Stepping Together-CT is a first-line treatment used with a stepped care model. Salloum will provide training and consultation on delivering Stepping Together-CT.

Ernest Gonzales, PhD, MSSW is a first-gen Latinx gerontologist who is a scholar in the areas of productive aging, health equity, discrimination, and social policy. His research advances our understanding of the relationships between healthy aging, social determinants of health, productive activities, and intergenerational contexts. Gonzales' work is supported by many funders, including the National Institute on Aging, the U.S. Social Security Administration, and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, and is published in leading scientific journals.
