Congratulations, Spring 2023 CBCS graduates! 🎓🎉


A total of 576 students graduated during USF's Spring 2023 Commencement with degrees from CBCS, including USF's youngest graduate this semester who earned her Bachelor of Arts in Criminology. The commencement ceremonies included 399 students receiving undergraduate degrees, 162 students receiving master's degrees, and 15 students receiving doctoral degrees from CBCS. Meet some outstanding CBCS graduates.

CSD graduate bridges passion for linguistics with military service


Despite facing various challenges as a young girl, such as having a speech impediment that limited her ability to communicate, Kiante Smith persevered and overcame her lisp with the help of a speech specialist who has had a profound impact on her life. Smith is a future military intelligence officer of the US Army known for her exceptional public speaking skills and her passion for helping others. Read more from USF News.

CBCS researchers recognized for outstanding projects


Multiple students were honored at the USF Student Research Awards Luncheon, including Florida High Tech Corridor student researchers, Sigma Xi inductees, as well as recipients of USF Chapter Grant Awards, Undergraduate Research Awards, Judy Genshaft Honors College Awards, Graduate Student Research Symposium Awards, USF Sarasota Manatee campus Trailblazer Research Scholarships, and Postdoctoral Research Symposium Awards. BSW graduates receive awards as they are welcomed into the profession


Thirty-one graduates of the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree were celebrated at the BSW Pinning Ceremony held in the MHC atrium. Students were recognized for their hard work in completing the program, and Associate in Research Chris Groeber, MSW recognized those who studied child welfare. Associate Professor Iraida Carrion, PhD, LCSW welcomed eight new inductees into the Phi Alpha Honors Society, and many others earned recognition from the Social Work Society. The students received their pins from Sharon Barber on behalf of the National Association of Social Workers.

ABA Expo 2023

ABA students share research findings


Graduate and undergraduate Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) students recently participated in poster presentation sessions, sharing the findings of their research projects with fellow students, faculty, and mentors. Organized and hosted by ABA doctoral candidate Madeline Risse, the undergraduate research poster session introduced the students to research dissemination. The ABA program also held its 16th annual Community Applications of Behavior Analysis Expo for its graduate students. The program's affiliated agencies and supervisors also attended that event.

BHC graduates honored at pinning ceremony


Thirty graduates of the Behavioral Healthcare (BHC) program were welcomed to the profession during the pinning ceremony Thursday afternoon in the C.W. Bill Young Hall. Guest speakers congratulated the students on all they have accomplished so far and offered words of advice for future endeavors. These graduates are equipped with knowledge of treatment approaches and the organization, finances, and outcome of behavioral health services.

Group Music Intervention to Reduce Agitation in Memory Care: A Cluster-Randomized Trial

Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) impact over 42% of the nearly one million assisted living residents in the United States. Up to 90% of these residents will experience agitation and other neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) during the disease's progression. NPS can lead to poor quality of life, increased caregiver stress, and faster disease progression. The University of South Florida Group Music Intervention (USF-GMI) program was developed to address these pressing issues in memory care communities. This research study will test the efficacy of the refined intervention in reducing NPS, antipsychotic medication use, and hospitalizations, as well as lowering staff distress. The project is expected to benefit hundreds of residents with ADRD, improve their quality of care by providing access to a novel group music engagement program, training staff on using music intervention for NPS management. This innovative research project aligns with the 2020 National Dementia Care Research Summit's call to develop interventions targeting the social and emotional needs of persons with dementia, their care partners, and direct care workers. Opioid Training Webinar Modules (CORE)

Flagler Cares partnered with the USF Criminal Justice, Mental Health, and Substance Abuse Technical Assistance Center (CJMHSA TAC) to develop a series of pre-recorded webinars for the Flagler County Coordinated Opioid Recovery Initiative (CORE). The primary goal of the project was to ensure that all CORE partners have baseline knowledge of key issues related to opioid use disorder service delivery. Under the direction of Shockley, the CJMHSA TAC engaged USF College of Behavioral and Community Sciences faculty and staff with expertise to develop the webinar presentations. The three webinars (deliverables for this project) include 1) Motivational Interviewing presented by Amanda Sharp, 2) Stigma and Opioid Use Disorders presented by Kristin Kosyluk, and 3) Trauma-Informed Care presented by Jessica Rice and Kathleen Moore. These webinars will be available for Flagler County to access as on-demand training modules as they onboard stakeholders involved with the CORE projects.

Call for Participants: Research Study Testing a Prototype Chatbot Disclosure Deliberator


The USF ACCESS Lab and the STigma Action Research Lab are conducting a study to test out an interactive, SMS-based chatbot program. Through testing the prototype chatbot, you will create a disclosure story and learn about the disclosure decision process. The research study includes interacting with the chatbot program over three sessions and providing feedback on the prototype. Compensation includes $30 for initial surveys and chatbot prototype testing, $20 for qualitative interviews, and $15 if participating in the chatbot booster and follow-up survey.
