Social Work Professor Joins "Salud Latina USF" Conversation on Covid-19 | |
Jerome Galea, PhD, MSW, RCSWI, spoke with the College of Public Health's (COPH) Drs. Miguel Reina Ortiz and Abraham A. Salinas-Miranda about how the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted the mental health of Spanish-speaking individuals in the U.S. and globally. The talk was part of a series of conversations hosted by COPH as part of its "Salud Latina USF" initiative. Dr. Galea and the other panelists discussed the ways in which the pandemic has affected the disparities experienced by Latinos surrounding mental health, stigma, and the connection between physical and mental health.

Aging Studies Professor's Research Shows Relationship Between Sleep and Heart Health | |
Soomi Lee, PhD, was featured on USF News for her research on the relationship between sleep and heart health. Dr. Lee is an assistant professor and director of the STEALTH lab in the School of Aging Studies. The featured study reveals the importance of assessing co-existing sleep health problems within an individual to uncover the risk of heart disease. Since sleep health can be modified, researchers say these findings can contribute to future prevention strategies to mitigate the risk of heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in the U.S.

Aging Studies Professor Discusses Livable Communities on WKDW 97.5 FM
Professor Kathy Black, PhD, spoke with Jaha Cummings on WKDW 97.5 FM's Tricounty Hour about livable communities and America's response to the needs of its rapidly growing older population. According to the Population Reference Bureau, the number of Americans age 65 and older is expected to nearly double by 2060, totaling around 95 million adults, compared to the 52 million in 2018. Dr. Black also explored the goal of the establishment of livable communities in order to fully support this aging population. Listen to a recording here.

CSD Students Celebrate Black Heritage Month
To celebrate Black Heritage Month, the student organization Minority Students in Communication Sciences and Disorders hosted Cheryl Paul and Dr. Darla Freeman Williams at its general body meeting. The speech-language pathologists shared their expertise with students and gave advice on careers in the field.

Aging Studies Professor Presents at Focus Group Discussion
Lindsay Peterson, PhD, represented the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) at a national focus group discussion. This discussion was in support of a study that Healthcare Ready is working on under the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness and Advancing Innovation Act of 2019. The purpose of this discussion was to collect information and insight on preparedness and response initiatives and needs from stakeholders who work with or advocate for order adult and assisted living populations. Dr. Peterson recently published a paper discussing preparing for and managing disasters in nursing homes and assisted living communities, “You Just Forge Ahead”: The Continuing Challenges of Disaster Preparedness and Response in Long-Term Care in Innovations in Aging.

FMHI invites undergraduate students to apply for a highly selective Summer Research Institute that is funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
The Summer Research Institute (SRI@FMHI) is designed for students interested in building their research skills within the context of substance use and co-occurring disorders to help them prepare for a Senior Thesis and/or graduate school.
