CFS professor awarded $3.3 million grant to build positive school culture | |
The Department of Child and Family Studies (CFS) has been awarded over $3.3 million as part of its continued collaboration with the University of Oregon’s Technical Assistance Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. Professor Heather George, PhD, who has been Co-PI and Co-Director of the National Center since 2018 and co-wrote the grant application, will continue to co-direct the Center with Professors Kent McIntosh from the University of Oregon and Brandi Simonsen from the University of Connecticut.

Social work associate professor presents results of research with MSW students | |
Jerome Galea, PhD, LCSW, MSW, an associate professor in the School of Social Work, presented during a webinar hosted by the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation. The webinar explored how the evidence-based intervention Project Management Plus (PM+) – which was originally developed by the World Health Organization to address mental health treatment gaps in low- and middle-income countries – is now being implemented in the U.S. Galea talked about his training of bilingual USF Master of Social Work (MSW) students to deliver PM+.

Aging studies professor spearheads effort to designate USF as an age-friendly university
In a significant move to address societal aging and the unique needs and contributions of older adults, the University of South Florida has joined the international Age-Friendly University Global Network. School of Aging Studies Professor Kathy Black, PhD spearheaded the move. She told USF News, "This designation underscores our leadership in responding to the demographic imperative of our time – societal aging. Much work on aging is occurring across the university, and we look forward to leveraging our substantial assets to create more synergies across colleges, departments, faculty, and students.” Read more.

Criminology assistant professor discusses his approach to educating cybersecurity students in new podcast episode
Criminology Assistant Professor C. Jordan Howell, PhD joined the host of the Future of Cyber Risk podcast to discuss how he is working to train well-rounded future cybersecurity practitioners. In the episode, he stresses the importance of holistic training in academia and the wide variety of skills students need to be successful security practitioners. He also covers topics including AI and scholarship around cybercriminal behavior. Listen to the episode.

Rightpath professors receive $1.8 million grant to improve early education programs in Florida
The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) recently awarded Rightpath Research & Innovation Center Professor Jason Anthony, PhD, and Associate Research Professor Jeffrey Williams, PhD, a $1.8 million contract titled, "Development of an Accountability System for Florida's Voluntary Prekindergarten Program." This collaborative project, in partnership with FLDOE and Hillsborough County Public Schools, aims to enhance the quality of early education programs throughout Florida. Read more.

CSD students get hands-on experience at Pinellas County ESE Centers
Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) graduate students have been assisting speech-language pathologists at the Nina Harris and Paul B Stephens Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Centers. These centers are dedicated to providing a safe, nurturing environment where students with severe or profound special needs can build self-confidence, independence, and self-esteem to maximize their success. Clinical Instructors Marian Lowther, MS, CCC-SLP, and Katie Johnson are supervising students at these sites as they obtain hands-on experience providing interventions with these specialized populations. MSW student graduates from United Nations Immersion Program
Jacqueline Houston, an MSW/MPH concurrent degree student, spent the first week of her field placement at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. There, she graduated from the United Nations Immersion Program hosted by the UN Institute for Training and Research. Houston attended expert lectures, workshops, conferences, career development sessions, and guided tours of the UN System agencies in Geneva. Read more.
