Burruss Surveyor class

Outwit, outlast, outpublish: Criminology associate professor gamifies survey design class

George W. Burruss, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Criminology, took a different approach to his survey design class this past spring; he used gamification to enhance the learning experience for both students and instructors. Burruss modeled his class after the reality game show "Survivor," dividing the class into three "tribes," creating team-building activities based on course concepts, and putting their knowledge to the test with various challenges throughout the semester. The reaction? "Congratulations for making me care about a quiz for the first time ever," said one student. In the article published in ACJS Today, Burruss concludes that the course not only attained the educational goals he set out but also was "tremendous fun." Read the full article.

The team, which includes multiple CFS faculty members, will identify and examine disparities in behavioral health service provision, accessibility, utilization, and outcomes, as well as reductions over time in response to the statewide implementation of equity strategies.
