FMHI celebrates its 50th anniversary
The Florida Mental Health Institute (FMHI) commemorated 50 years of excellence in mental health research and education with a celebration hosted at the USF Alumni Center. Attendees gathered to reconnect with old friends, make new connections, honor the legacy of FMHI, and hear from Anita Everett, MD, DFAPA, of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Multiple awards were also given out at the event, including the Outstanding Behavioral Health Research Faculty Award, the Recovery Advocate Award, the Community Leadership Award, and the Bob Friedman Endowed Scholarship Award. BRIGHT Network launches new platform, connecting human trafficking victims to critical resources in the community
More than one hundred anti-trafficking professionals came together at USF St. Petersburg to officially launch the BRIGHT (Bridging Resources and Information Gaps in Human Trafficking) Network, an online platform that helps victims of human trafficking escape their situations by connecting them with organizations and resources in their community. The BRIGHT Network, developed by researchers in close collaboration with anti-trafficking professionals and survivors, is an online, vetted, secure resource referral network for those who provide services to victims of trafficking. CFS research administrators contribute to SRA International meeting
Department of Child and Family Studies (CFS) Assistant Chair of Operations Kimberly Read, PhD, CFS Contracts and Grants Manager Janet Reyes, and CFS PreAward Specialist Telisha McKenzie recently attended the Southern and Northeast sections joint section meeting of the Society of Research Administrators International (SRA International) in Hilton Head, SC. Read, who served as the president of the Southern Section of SRA International, was recognized for her service. She, as well as Reyes, also presented at the meeting. Read more.

CSD associate professor gives presentation on early childhood stuttering
Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) Associate Professor Nathan Maxfield, PhD, CCC-SLP, recently gave an invited talk at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital (JHACH). Maxfield, who is also the principal investigator of the Bulls Stuttering Lab, updated speech-language pathologists working in the JHACH system about emerging trends in the evaluation and treatment of early childhood stuttering. The presentation was part of JHACH's celebration of National Speech-Language-Hearing Month. Read more.

MSW students share findings related to LGBTQ+ youth in the foster care system
Two Online MSW students recently presented research that they conducted about the importance of inclusive environments for LGBTQ+ youth in the child welfare system at the Safe Children Coalition Conference. Shawn Fox and Valerie Teachout presented alongside Assistant Professor of Instruction David Kilmnick, PhD, to provide insights that might help child welfare professionals foster welcoming environments for all individuals in their care. USF NSSLHA chapters earn high honors from national organization
The undergraduate and graduate chapters of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) at USF were awarded Gold Chapter Honors by the national organization for 2024. Chapter Honors recognizes affiliated NSSLHA chapters that advance National NSSLHA’s mission to inspire, empower, and support students in communication sciences and disorders programs. NSSLHA supports nearly 11,000 members and 350+ chapters at colleges and universities nationwide.

USF launches new tool for human trafficking victims

'With human trafficking victims,” Wagers said, “if they're in that crisis mode, and they reach out, they'll reach out once, and if they don't get something typically, they're kind of lost."
