Eric Hill received the Staff Senate Quiet Quality Award for his outstanding dedication to the coworkers and students of CBCS. He was honored for his particularly diligent service in the past year as we have relied more heavily on him to keep remote classrooms running smoothly. Eric has earned "superhero status" within the college, as he never hesitates to jump in to help. He is appreciated beyond words. Congratulations, Eric!

Social Work Students Participate in Legislative Education and Advocacy Days
School of Social Work students participated in this year's virtual National Association of Social Workers Legislative Education and Advocacy Days alongside hundreds of other students, faculty, and social work professionals in Florida. On the first day, they received advocacy training and learned about important legislation before the state legislature that would affect social workers and their clients. CFS Chair and Professor Featured in La Gaceta
Mario Hernandez, PhD, was featured in La Gaceta, a minority- and family-owned newspaper that shares unique views of local people and politics and world news. The story explores Dr. Hernandez's childhood growing up in Ybor City to a Cuban father and Spanish and Sicilian mother and his experiences with racism against the Latin community. In the article, Dr. Hernandez discusses his academic career and early aspirations to be an animal behavioralist, a dream driven by his love for WEDU programming. The article follows Dr. Hernandez's career path and steps that brought him to his current position as the chair of the Department of Child and Family Studies. Click here to read the full story.

Final Call for Proposals for CBCS Internal Research Grant
The college is requesting grant applications up to $20,000 that hold promise of seeding future funding from local, foundation, and federal funding agencies to understand and address social, educational, and health disparities at the local, national, or international levels stemming from the COVID pandemic. The research should specifically focus on improving understanding and yielding meaningful and sustained solutions to pandemics now and in the future, especially as it relates to systemic racism and associated social, environmental, educational, and economic issues affecting marginalized communities, such as discrimination, poverty, health disparities, violence, justice, policing, and racial politics.

The Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute (FMHI) at the University of South Florida is dedicated to research and education related to substance use and co-occurring disorders. FMHI invites undergraduate students to apply for a highly selective Summer Research Institute that is funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
The Summer Research Institute (SRI@FMHI) is designed for students interested in building their research skills within the context of substance use and co-occurring disorders to help them prepare for a Senior Thesis and/or graduate school.
