The week of Thanksgiving, CBCS Associate Dean of Research Howard Goldstein, PhD, visited colleagues at Universitat Oberta de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain. He met with faculty and graduate student groups to discuss common research interests related to early intervention. Goldstein also participated in a workshop on learning disorders with over 200 attendees and gave a talk titled, "Early Language and Literacy Intervention: What Works in the USA?"

Social work PhD student presents at PRIM&R Annual Conference | |
Karah Greene, MSW, a PhD student in the School of Social Work, presented two posters based on her work with Associate Professor Jerome Galea, PhD, LCSW, at the 2023 Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R) Annual Conference in Washington, DC. One of her presentations was titled, "HIV Cure-related Study Vignettes Capture Stakeholder Perspectives on Ethical Payment Amount."

School of Social Work hosts pinning ceremonies for BSW graduates
In two pinning ceremonies in the MHC Atrium, graduates of the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) were welcomed into the profession by School of Social Work faculty, staff, and community partners. A separate pinning ceremony was held for graduates of the new online BSW program, hosted through the Sarasota-Manatee campus, and gave the students the opportunity to meet each other in person for the first time.

Behavioral healthcare graduates welcomed to the profession
Twenty-nine graduates of the behavioral healthcare program were honored in a pinning ceremony and welcomed to the profession by Department of Mental Health Law and Policy faculty. Director of the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute Kathleen Moore, PhD, served as the ceremony's speaker and shared a passage from the Dr. Suess book, "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" The graduates then celebrated with their friends and family, taking pictures and enjoying cake.

CFS faculty and staff present at National PBIS Leadership Forum
Department of Child and Family Studies (CFS) faculty and staff were invited to serve as presenters or discussion facilitators at the recent National Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Leadership Forum in Chicago. Presentations and discussions offered guidance and tools for strengthening prevention-based systems that support the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students to ensure engagement in learning. Provost meets with CBCS faculty, staff, and graduate students
CBCS faculty, staff, and graduate students had the opportunity to meet Provost Prasant Mohapatra, PhD, and have open dialogues about growth opportunities and challenges in CBCS and university-wide. Mohapatra addressed concerns about DEI and embedded services, shared insights about the duties of his office and its transformational relationship with the Office of Research, and discussed his hopes for the university's future.

BCOTB awards fellowship to ABA student
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) student Kalysta Gregory was awarded a $10,000 fellowship from Behavior Consulting of Tampa Bay (BCOTB). Gregory will engage in practical experience working at BCOTB, with the opportunity to continue her career there post-graduation. Read more.

CSD students attend ASHA Convention
Second-year graduate Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) students attended the 2023 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Convention in Boston. The students attended various sessions and learned from and networked with companies in the exhibit hall. Representing the department's graduate National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) chapter in the Southeastern Conference, four of the students also participated in the National NSSLHA Knowledge Bowl. MSW student receives Maternal and Child Health Leadership Professional Development Award
Jacqueline Houston, a Master of Social Work (MSW) and Master of Public Health concurrent degree student, received the Maternal and Child Health Leadership Professional Development Award from the USF Center for Excellence in Maternal and Child Health. This award funded her training experience at the Child Welfare Immersive Collaborative Simulation hosted by the Florida Institute for Child Welfare. The simulation taught participants about the intricacies of child protection investigations. Read more.

CSD graduate students participate in Great American Teach-In
First- and second-year students in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) participated in the Great American Teach-In at local elementary schools in Tampa. They taught students about the field of speech-language pathology and covered various aspects of communication, swallowing, evaluations, and steps to take to become a speech-language pathologist. They also led hands-on activities and demonstrations with the students.

This interactive webinar led by Department of Criminology Visiting Assistant Instructor Cary Hopkins Eyles, MA, will discuss what shame is, the neurobiology of shame, and what we can do about it. Understanding biological components of shame can increase the ability of those with substance use disorders to progress in treatment and recovery.

Auditions: This Is My Brave - College Edition at USF

The team is seeking storytellers with a 5-minute story to share about their lived experience with mental health and/or substance use conditions via poetry, original music, comedy, essay, dance or other artistic expression. The show will be live on stage this spring on April 5, 2024.
