Effects of Care and Caregiver Support on ADRD Risk of LGBTQ+ Older Adults

Sponsor: Alzheimer's Association

9/1/2023-8/31/2026

Amount: $199,899

This grant will be one of the first studies to examine Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) risk and protective factors and its relationship with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and/or another identity(LGBTQ+)-affirming care providers and family caregivers among LGBTQ+ older populations. This study will provide insight into the mechanisms impacting ADRD risk and resilience among LGBTQ+ older adults and the effects that LGBTQ+ affirmation in care and caregiver support may have on LGBTQ+ ADRD health disparities. The proposed project leverages innovative Vanderbilt University Social Networks, Aging, and Policy Study (VUSNAPS; PI: McKay; R01AG063771) panel data, which is the best possible resource that currently exists to examine the associations at a single cross-section and over time among protective and risk factors of ADRD among older LGBTQ+ adults. Findings will inform the development of evidence-based strategies and interventions that aim to decrease ADRD risk for LGBTQ+ older populations.
