Sen. Rouson gets applause

New mental health and substance use research center in CBCS to honor Sen. Darryl Rouson


Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the intent to establish the Senator Darryl E. Rouson Center for Substance Abuse and Mental Health Research within the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute, part of USF's College of Behavioral and Community Sciences. The announcement was made during an event held at USF Health Downtown, where the governor signed Senate Bill 1620, Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders, sponsored by Rouson, which implements several recommendations to address mental health issues in the state. Read more.

Virtual reality job training program hosts info session for potential students


A new workforce training initiative aimed at individuals with disabilities is preparing for its first cohort this August, combining cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence technologies to prepare participants for careers in skilled trades. The program, Delivering Innovative Vocational Education through Virtual Reality Technology, held an information session on June 18 for prospective students, families, and professionals. Read more.

USF's Justice Quest camp gives high schoolers a behind-the-scenes look at criminal justice


Twenty-six high school students got an in-depth look into criminal behavior, forensic science, and investigation techniques as part of Justice Quest, a camp offered through Youth Experiences at the University of South Florida. The camp, held June 23-27 on the Tampa campus, was led by Cary Hopkins Hall, visiting assistant instructor in the Department of Criminology. Read more.

Mental Health First Aid training equips students, faculty, and staff with vital skills


Faculty and staff from the Department of Child and Family Studies, along with students from LAUNCH at USF and the Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling program, participated in Mental Health First Aid training. This skills-based course teaches participants about mental health and substance-use challenges. Read more.
