Sustainable CT Celebrates Juneteenth
The Sustainable CT Community Match Fund champions organizations and efforts to represent and reflect the wide-array of people and perspectives across Connecticut. Our first and only required action for certification is to take steps that "Optimize for Equity." In this month's CMF corner, we're excited to highlight two current Community Match Fund projects seeking support for Juneteenth events.

Even though Juneteenth has recently been recognized as a national federal holiday, it's still not familiar to everyone as a day that commemorates and celebrates the emancipation of African-American's from slavery. The Smithsonian Museum of African-American History & Culture writes, "Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control. As a result, in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved people would not be free until much later. Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as 'Juneteenth' by the newly freed people in Texas."

Both the Ujima Juneteenth Festival and Vernon Community Network Celebrates June are efforts by grassroots leaders to share this history, and recognize that the process to perfect our union with equity and justice for all is ongoing. Consider visiting both pages and making a contribution to help them reach their goals, and forward the recognition of this important holiday.
For more fun and informative June events,
Thank you...
...for helping us "Spring into Summer!"
Our Spring into Summer Celebration was a great success and a lot of fun thanks to all of our partners, friends and participating communities. The venue was stunning, the weather was fantastic, and the company couldn't have been better. Our special thanks to Richard Johnson, recently retired town manager of Glastonbury, for sharing his "brownfield to boathouse" success story with us. Special thanks as well to the generous sponsors of our event - CT Green Bank, Energysource, Casella, and Green Banyan Consulting. And congratulations - again - to our wonderful Connecticut towns: Montville and Winchester for achieving Bronze certification, and Guilford, Litchfield, New Haven and Portland for being designated Climate Leaders. We truly enjoy celebrating you all. See you in October!
