December Newsletter

Helping People. Changing Lives.

Community Action changes people's lives, embodies the spirit of hope, improves communities, and makes America a better place to live. We care about the entire community, and we are dedicated to helping people help themselves and each other.

Hello and Welcome to MinnCAP's First Newsletter

Some of you may know us well, and some of you may have only heard of us. For those who work with us regularly, thanks for all the great work you do.

For those of you who are getting to know us, this newsletter will serve as a direct connection to Minnesota Community Action Partnership (MinnCAP). Our mission is to support the 24 Community Action Agencies and 11 Tribal Nations in Minnesota as they work to eliminate poverty.

Each month, we'll share relevant news and information happening across the state within our valued Community Action network. We'll showcase how agencies are making a difference as well as provide important data to support and raise awareness of systematic issues faced by people who live in poverty.

Families don't thrive on their own - their success is intertwined with a community's overall stability, economic growth, and its progress toward providing equal opportunity. We plan to share people's stories of success in achieving economic stability and how Community Action impacted their lives. In addition, we'll also highlight our policy priorities and avenues to engage with us and local agencies.

I am looking forward to connecting with you each month. If you're as excited as I am, please read on and share our newsletter with your friends, family, neighbors, co-workers and anyone else you can think of as we all are in this together.

Best,

Lori Schultz

MinnCAP Executive Director

Empowered by Community Action

"I grew up in Community Action," LeAndra Estis of St. Paul said, and she's not joking.

At 40 years old, LeAndra has spent the second half her life participating in Community Action Partnership of Ramsey & Washington Counties (CAPRW) programs, using its services, volunteering on its boards, donating to the nonprofit and recommending it to other people.

“She maximized what Community Action could do for her, but did not take advantage of it,” said Community Action Partnership of Hennepin County Executive Director Dr. Clarence Hightower of LeAndra. He was executive director at CAPRW when she first encountered the agency.

LeAndra is now a state of Minnesota employee, a homeowner and an advocate for agencies that help people with low incomes. She credits much of her success to what she learned through Community Action.

Minnesota Community Action Agencies are nonprofits. They can accept donations from individuals, businesses and foundations, which are tax deductible. Donate to KOOTASCA Community Action as the agency attempts find solutions to poverty and help community members prosper. Every donation matters. None are too small or too big.

Nothing can replicate poverty, but hosting a poverty simulation can enlighten your community, organization or nonprofit about the difficulties households in it can face. MinnCAP can facilitate and design a poverty simulation to bring poverty's challenges to the forefront. Contact MinnCAP to discuss hosting a simulation.

Paid Family Leaves Boosts Wellbeing

A new study has found postpartum individuals living in states with generous mandated paid family and medical leave (PFML) are more likely to breastfeed and less likely to experience postpartum depression symptoms compared to those living in states with little or no mandated state-paid leave. The findings were even more pronounced among lower-income populations covered by Medicaid.
