May is National Community Action Month, highlighting and celebrating Community Action Agencies’ (CAAs) work to help millions of low-income families and individuals escape poverty, move toward self-sufficiency and achieve economic stability each year. In the United States and its territories, CAAs are local private and public non-profit organizations that carry out the Community Action Program (CAP), which was founded by the 1964 Economic Opportunity Act to fight poverty by empowering the poor as part of the War on Poverty to carry out the Promise of Community Action to “Help People and Change Lives”.
During National Community Action Month, CAAs truly make the Promise of Community Action come alive by hosting events that help put a “face” on the families and individuals striving to achieve independence. This month is a fantastic opportunity for CAAs to share their stories, promote their work, emphasize their impact, shout their successes and honor personal achievements. Some governors and mayors even proclaim May “Community Action Month” in their states and cities.
As CAAs are showcasing their programs this month, they are also giving local residents, many of whom are unaware of the poverty in their communities, a first-hand look at the struggles low-income families and individuals face, and how Community Action programs help these families achieve financial security and a better way of life.
