| | National Child Abuse Prevention Month |
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to highlight the crucial role communities play in supporting families and preventing child maltreatment. Beyond April, continued efforts are essential to raising awareness of child and family well-being while implementing strategies that strengthen families and safeguard children. Preventing and mitigating the effects of child abuse and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) is central to the work of Community Action and intrinsic to many of the services administered by the more than 1,000 Community Action Agencies (CAA) across America. Through collaboration, prevention services, and support systems, parents, caregivers, and communities can be empowered to create safe, nurturing environments.
Child Abuse Prevention Month has been observed every April since 1983, serving as a critical initiative to address and prevent child abuse and neglect in the United States. The observance emerged from increased advocacy and legislative action focused on child protection. A pivotal step in this movement was the passage of the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) in 1974, which established federal support for combating child maltreatment.
April was officially designated as Child Abuse Prevention Month in 1983, following a week-long observance in June 1982 that laid the foundation for this nationwide commitment to safeguarding children.
