As we begin 2025, I want to share my excitement for a new year at Macon-Bibb County Economic Opportunity Council, Inc. We look forward to serving more families and individuals across our area and promoting the prosperity and wellbeing of our community throughout the year. The future looks bright and we are glad you are with us on this journey.

It is with a grateful heart that we pay tribute to President Jimmy Carter. His community minded, service-based beliefs have been an example to us all, both nationally and internationally. President Carter’s unending outreach, including Habitat for Humanity, has brought people together to serve others. We will honor President Carter’s memory by continuing to serve and share his beliefs of peace, human rights, and unselfish service.

Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.

On January 20, we as a nation will once again celebrate and honor the life, legacy, and lasting impact of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King’s work to promote freedom, justice, and peace continues to influence the hearts and minds of people across the nation and around the world. Dr. King’s legacy continues to serve as a beacon for those who advocate for peace, equality, freedom, and justice.

Some highlights from his incredible work include the following:

  • Dr. King was one of the leaders of the Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955-1956), which resulted in the desegregation of public buses.
  • The “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Dr. King in 1963 asserted that “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” and encouraged civil disobedience against unjust laws.
  • During 1963’s March on Washington, Dr. King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech, which became one of the defining moments in the civil rights movement and, indeed, in the history of our nation.
  • Dr. King’s advocacy was essential to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, dismantling legal segregation and protecting voting rights.

The FGP prepared snack bags to give out to the residents at Archway Transitional Care Home. They will deliver on Wednesday January 15th.

The Martin Luther King, Jr., National Day of Service is Monday, Jan. 20! This day is a defining moment each year when Americans across the country step up to make communities more equitable and take action to create the Beloved Community of Dr. King’s dream. This year, we celebrate 30 years of MLK Day of Service and its impact as more Americans embrace the idea that citizenship involves taking an active role in improving communities. Check out the MLK Day of Service 2025 Toolkit to find ways to participate and share your story with AmeriCorps by filling out this short form
