On Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at 1:39 PM, the City of Highland Park Police Department responded to a report of a student with a firearm at TrueNorth Educational Cooperative 804 in Highland Park. The individual, a juvenile, was immediately taken into custody and a firearm was recovered. There were no shots fired, no one was injured, and there is no indication at this time there was intent to harm others. A preliminary investigation did not indicate an additional suspect or threat to surrounding areas. Given the age of the individual in custody, the Juvenile Court Act prohibits the City from sharing further information with the public.
Public safety is the highest priority of the City. Although the preliminary investigation indicates that this was an isolated incident, out of an abundance of caution, the Police Department will be increasing patrols near all Highland Park schools.
