Community Advocates Connections

Friends,

I'm excited to share the good news that Community Advocates will be celebrating our golden anniversary in 2026! It's incredible to realize that 50 years ago, Ramon Wagner, a former Catholic priest, and two volunteers opened a storefront community hub to help North Side neighborhood residents solve problems related to their housing and basic needs issues. Ramon and the early Community Advocates worked tirelessly to support people seeking help by valuing their human dignity and providing hope during turbulent times. Now, five decades later, Ramon's vision and spirit live on in our 40+ programs that serve 60,000 Milwaukeeans per year. Next year--on September 18, 2026, to be exact--please join us as we will celebrate 50 years of nurturing hope in our community. Your partnership and support over the decades has sustained our work and our hope in the future.

In gratitude,

Andi Elliott

Rental Housing Panel Spurred Discussion

On Thursday, September 18, Community Advocates Public Policy Institute hosted “Housing in Milwaukee: What’s Changed since 2020?,” a panel discussion moderated by Community Advocates COO Maudwella Kirkendoll on how the city’s housing landscape has shifted in recent years, what resources remain, and what’s needed to build a more stable future.

Panelists included Dawn Anastasi, Landlord and Executive Committee Member of the Rental Property Association of Wisconsin; Ericka Crowley, Director of the Milwaukee Rental Housing Resource Center; Jonny Davis, Property Owner and Real Estate Investor; Kari Southern, Deputy Director of Community Advocates Public Policy Institute; and Nick Toman, Housing Team Managing Attorney with Legal Aid Society of Milwaukee.

After the panel, a lively Q&A with guests touched on how tenants can overcome barriers to finding good housing as well as the resources that are available to community members. Guests also enjoyed treats to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the RHRC. The event was sponsored by the PPI Members Network.

Unique Solutions to Housing Instability Highlighted on Community Advocates’ Bus Tour

Community Advocates hosted a guided tour for community partners, donors, and Board members to highlight our facilities and programs.

The tour began at our downtown offices, including the Milwaukee Rental Housing Resource Center, and traveled to the Milwaukee Women's Center and Autumn West Safe Haven. These sites aim to engage with community members in easily accessible, culturally informed settings to meet their needs and walk with them as they reach their goals.

A special thank you goes out to United Way of Greater Milwaukee and Waukesha, which has been a steadfast supporter of our programs for people with unstable housing through their Safe and Stable Homes initiative.

Community Shared Hope and Resilience in Fight Against Overdose

August 31 is observed worldwide as International Overdose Awareness Day, and in Milwaukee, the RISE Drug Free MKE community coalition has marked it for nine years to honor those who have been impacted by overdose. Over the years, the threat from ever-more lethal opioids has taken a toll on our community. At the same time, the community has come together with more resources, compassion, and hope. As a result, Milwaukee County recently saw a significant drop in overdose deaths, from 652 deaths in 2023 to 450 fatal overdoses in 2024.

In August, the RISE Drug Free MKE coalition, organized by Community Advocates Public Policy Institute, organized events around the theme of "Driven by Hope" to support the families and friends of those lost to overdose as well as people living with a substance use issue. The events culminated with the Hoan Bridge lighting up purple on August 31, thanks to coalition partner Light the Hoan.

Community Advocates Implements

Berrada Properties Tenant Eviction Diversion Program

In 2024, the state Department of Justice and Berrada Properties Management and its owner, Joseph Berrada, negotiated a settlement for alleged legal violations. The settlement included programs and services specifically for Berrada tenants and the public to be delivered by Community Advocates.

Community Advocates helps current Berrada tenants with payment plans, short-term rental assistance, and move-out agreements. Berrada tenants can visit the Milwaukee Rental Housing Resource Center located within our downtown Milwaukee offices at 728 N. James Lovell St., Milwaukee.

In addition, we’re offering monthly rental housing events for people who want to move into a Berrada property and pay rent based on their income. Follow our Facebook page to learn when the next events will be scheduled this summer.
