Virginia’s Community Bankers Deliver a Strong Message on Capitol Hill

Last week, nearly two dozen Virginia community bankers joined with 500+ peers from across the country to participate in ICBA’s 2025 Capital Summit in Washington, D.C. Our delegation once again proudly stood united in delivering a powerful message to policymakers: community banks are essential to the well-being of the communities we serve.

On Wednesday, May 14th, community bankers met with members of Virginia’s congressional delegation to advocate for the industry’s top legislative priorities. Discussions focused on a range of timely issues, including: the CFPB’s burdensome 1071 rule, legislation that would establish a regulatory framework for stablecoin, the advancement of ICBA-backed tax provisions within the “One, Big, Beautiful Bill” package, and the urgent need to reevaluate the tax exemption for credit unions with more than $1 billion in assets. Advocates also addressed agricultural lending, rural development policy, and the growing compliance challenges facing community banks.

Special guests at the Summit included House Financial Services Committee Chairman French Hill and Deputy Treasury Secretary Michael Faulkender, both of whom reinforced the importance of community banking and echoed support for our priorities. As Rep. Byron Donalds said during his remarks, “Community banks are the lifeblood of their communities and shouldn’t be burdened with the same regulatory requirements required for the largest banks.”

Newport News Police Warn Residents of In-Person Scam Involving Bank Accounts

"The Newport News Police Department is advising citizens of an in-person scam involving cellular devices and bank accounts.

Police said the suspects will usually be in a vehicle and approach residents about issues with their bank account. The suspect will claim to be locked out of their account and ask to have funds transferred.

During the interaction, they request the victim’s phone to conduct the transfer. Once in possession of the phone, the suspect manipulates the victim’s bank accounts, causing a loss of funds."

Report Warns of Deep Hit to Virginia’s Economy, Citing Federal Government Cuts

"One in seven jobs in Virginia is directly or indirectly linked to the federal government. Cuts to the federal workforce and government spending will mean a significant hit to Virginia’s economy this year, according a new economic forecast.

The University of Virginia’s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service forecasts Virginia will lose 32,000 jobs this year because of federal government cuts, economic output will slow and the unemployment rate will rise to 3.9% this year and as high as 4.7% in 2026."

Virginia Gubernatorial Hopefuls Share Their Housing Ideas as Commonwealth Struggles with Supply

"Virginia’s housing problems, like the nation’s, date back to the 2008 financial crisis. The influx of homes created a bubble that burst and saw foreclosures at record rates. Developers have been reluctant to ramp up home construction ever since.

Only now is the U.S. starting to reach pre-2008 levels of new construction for privately owned housing. Virginia is smack dab in the middle of the national average for such new construction, according to real estate industry trackers Construction Coverage. Their lead data analyst Michael Stromberg said incentives to build lean towards new luxury homes."

“It Changes Everything”: Citizens Warn of Data Center Impacts in Rural Virginia

"What started as a community conversation quickly turned into a passionate call to action.

On Saturday afternoon, May 10th, Warren County residents met at the Warren County Community Center to hear firsthand how data centers—the massive, windowless facilities that power cloud computing and artificial intelligence—are reshaping rural Virginia. For many in the room, it was the first time they had heard the full scope of the issue.

Their host was local resident Aiden Miller, who’s lived in Front Royal for a decade. 'This event came out of the growing buzz around data centers — not just in Warren County, but all across Virginia,' Miller said. 'I wanted to get everyone in the room to talk openly about what’s really happening.'"

Virginia’s Budget Surplus Grows as Revenues Beat Expectations Despite National Slowdown

"Virginia’s general fund revenues rose sharply in April, bucking signs of a national economic cooldown as the state continues to post steady long-time job growth and rake in more tax dollars than projected.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced Monday that general fund revenues are up 6.3% — nearly $1.5 billion — compared to the same 10-month period last fiscal year. April alone brought in $322.4 million more than the same month in 2024, marking an 8.8% jump. Overall, revenues are tracking 0.8% — or $211.1 million — ahead of the state’s official forecast, with two months left in the fiscal year."

Rural Communities are Keeping Virginia from Becoming an Exporter of People - That’s Where the Population Growth Is

"Virginia lies over top of an earthquake zone, something we’re occasionally reminded of.

Some of us felt the 2011 earthquake near Mineral in Louisa County that shook even the Washington Monument and damaged two schools in Louisa so severely they were closed for the rest of the school year. Others felt the much smaller earthquake that originated near Dillwyn in Buckingham County."
