Community Board 17 will be on summer recess, so there will be no General Board/Public Hearing or monthly committee meetings during the break.
Our office remains open and hard at work, continuing to provide services and support to our community.
Plus, we’re excited to share that fun and engaging events will be happening throughout the summer! Stay tuned and join us as we celebrate and connect with our neighbors.

Pop Up Audubon I
Saturdays and Sundays in July, 12–4 pm
Peninsula, Free: prospectpark.org/audubon
Join us by the Peninsula as we learn about Prospect Park's watercourse by examining our underwater visitors with magnifying glasses.
- Play + Go, 12–3 pm: Pop-Up Audubon Play and Go Kits feature a range of fun nature activities, games, puzzles, drawing exercises, find-me cards and much more. Families and children can enjoy nature independently as they explore and learn more about the park.
- Pond Water Discovery, 12–3 pm: Did you know that an entire community of living insects, plants and animals makes the Lullwater their home? Get a closer view with one of our Naturalists.
- Nature on the Go!, 3–4 pm: Join a park Naturalist as we explore the Park's shoreline and learn about the wildlife that calls it home. This is a great opportunity to be a Park Champion as we combine a nature walk with an important stewardship activity by helping to remove trash and discarded fishing line and hooks.

Outdoor Afro Community Birding Tour-Midwood Trail
Sunday, July 20, 9:30–11:30 am
Lefferts Historic House
Celebrate Summer with Prospect Park Alliance and Outdoor Afro, an organization that celebrates and inspires Black connections and leadership in nature, for a community birding tour for the BIPOC community. Explore the Midwood Trail, one of five freshly formalized scenic trails. Observe various bird species and connect with your local community in a shared appreciation for nature and wildlife. The walk will begin at the newly restored Lefferts Historic House.

Songs of Resistance and Joy!

Lefferts Historic House
Join Prospect Park Alliance and Shawne’ Lee for a musical tribute to the courage of her mother, Mama Joy Chatel, the activist and preservationist who saved 227 Abolitionist Place in downtown Brooklyn from destruction. Enjoy music on the Lefferts Historic House porch and hear Sister Shawne’ spin the songs that gave Chatel strength, happiness, peace of mind and soulful comfort.

New York City residents can request a free kit to test drinking water for lead through the Free Residential Lead Testing Program, or call 311. Lead does not have any color, odor, or taste.
The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will send you a test kit with instructions for collecting a sample of your drinking water.

On Saturday, June 28, Community Board 17’s Youth-Education Committee hosted the Annual Orlinda McInnis Spelling Bee in partnership with Chase Bank and PS 235 Janice Marie Knight School at Chase Bank on Utica Avenue.
The event kicked off with a Pre-Financial Info Session, followed by an exciting spelling competition where students showcased their skills and confidence!
A big thank you to our partners, volunteers, and community members who made this event a success. We’re proud to support youth education and financial literacy in our district!

CB17’s Commerce Committee was proud to join community partners for the Small Business Resource Fair on June 25 at the Flatbush YMCA!
Local business owners connected with resources, networked, and got valuable support to help their ventures grow.
| | Walkthrough of Utica Ave and Farragut Rd | | |
On July 9th, we joined Council Member Farah Louis’s office and representatives from DOT, MTA, and LIRR for a walk-through of Utica Avenue and Farragut Road.
The condition of this area has long been a concern for our community. Thanks to the ongoing advocacy of CB17 and Council Member Louis, we’re now working collaboratively with key agencies to spearhead meaningful change.

Walkthrough of Paerdegat Park | |
On July 17th, CB17 attended a productive walk-through of Paerdegat Park with Commissioner Marty Maher of the NYC Parks Department, joined by representatives from Council Member Farah Louis's office, Assemblymember Monique Chandler-Waterman’s office, and Community Board 17.
We came together to discuss ongoing concerns and explore future improvements for the park that serves as a vital green space for our community. Thank you to all who participated and voiced their support for making Paerdegat Park a cleaner, safer, and more welcoming space for everyone.

Please view the presentation to learn more about this process. If you have any budget requests, fill out the Google form below. The deadline to submit requests is July 31st.
If your submission is unclear and/or vague, we will not review it in September.
Ex: Community outreach is not a viable submission, but hiring more personnel to join the DSNY community outreach team to assist with community clean-ups and table at more events to teach residents about composting is a good submission.
