Polly Chandler, chair of the Department of Management, graduated from Leadership New Hampshire on May 23 in a ceremony at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center in Concord, New Hampshire.
L ibby McCann, core faculty in the Department of Environmental Studies, not only survived California's 300-mile Climate Ride, she had a great time on the trip, catching up with former students and faculty, and meeting Paul Hawken. Libby rode in honor of 2013 AUNE graduates in Environmental Education.
Susan Loman, left, with Vicky Karkou of Queen Margaret University, presented at a weekend dance-movement therapy (DMT) intensive, at the Edinburgh, Scotland, university in May. The workshop, Understanding Movement through the Kestenberg Movement Profile: Applications with Children, had twenty-seven participants from many different countries, including Poland, China, India, Israel, Germany, and England.
Vic Pantesco, Department of Clinical Psychology faculty, was on a panel of regional mental health services administrators at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Keene on April 17, and gave a presentation at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Keene on April 30. Find out more here.
Martha Straus, Department of Clinical Psychology faculty, spoke about family treatment with adolescent girls for an organization called Solutions On Site in London, Ontario, on May 31, and has many other presentations lined up. Find out more here.
Lorraine Mangione, PhD, will present a paper along with Donna DiCello, PsyD '96, and Megan Lyons, PsyD student, at the American Psychological Association Annual Convention in August in Hawaii. Find out more.
During her sabbatical, Katherine Clarke, chair of the Department of Applied Psychology, completed two Coursera MOOCS: "E-Learning and Digital Culture," offered by the University of Edinburgh and "Gamification," offered by the Wharton School of Business. She has written an article on gamification in counselor education and looks forward to putting the "fun" back into the AP department on her return.
Beth Kaplin, core faculty member in the Department of Environmental Studies, spoke to the Department of Environmental Biology at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, in April. She then went to Rwanda to work with AUNE's John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation-funded project at the National University of Rwanda (NUR). Read more about it here.
Kaplin received a $35,000 grant from START (global change System for Analysis, Research and Training) to run trainings this summer for members of the Regional Network for Conservation Educators in the Albertine Rift (RNCEAR). They will be taught by three ES faculty. Read more here.
Kaplin was also appointed coordinator for the Center of Excellence for Biodiversity in Rwanda. The node for the center is NUR, linked to the MSc in Biodiversity Conservation established by Kaplin and her colleagues at NUR with MacArthur Foundation funding.
A book chapter coauthored by Apollinaire William, doctoral student in AUNE's Department of Environmental Studies, and Kaplin has been published by the Oxford University Press, Primate Ecology and Conservation, edited by Eleanor Sterling, Nora Bynum, and Mary Blair. The title of the chapter is "Behavior Within Groups."
Barbara Stewart has been appointed to the position of Antioch University regional chief financial officer. She is a veteran higher education financial administrator who has served in senior capacities for many years in Ohio. She fills the position left by Tim Jordan, now chief financial officer of Antioch University.

New Trustees for AUNE Board
The AUNE Board of Trustees has elected four new trustees to the board:
- Ed Carignan, '01. Ed is a clinical child and adolescent psychologist in private practice in Bow, New Hampshire.
- Bob Coulter, '87. Bob is the director of the Litzsinger Road Ecology Center of the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, Missouri.
- Judy Fink, '80. Judy has recently retired to Vermont from her position as education programs director at the Stone Barns Farm in New York.
- Patricia Wand, '67. Pat was the university librarian and professor at American University in Washington, D.C. until her retirement in 2006; then she served four years as dean of the library at Zayed University in the United Arab Emirates.
The board elected officers for the 2013-2014 year: Charlton MacVeagh, chair; Robert Bull, '09, vice chair; and Michael Krinsky, treasurer. Trustee Cheryl Wilfong, '93, stepped down from the board after completing her term and was acknowledged for her service.

Scholarship Gift to Caruso
President David A. Caruso got an affectionate send-off at a retirement party May 17 at Stonewall Farm in Keene. One of the gifts will live on into the future-the David A. Caruso Innovation Scholarship Fund, founded by the AUNE Board of Trustees to honor President Caruso's service to AUNE. Read more here.

Need Writing Help?
The AUNE Writing Center is open this summer for students to come in for writing support or help with cover letters and resumes. Sessions are available on the ground, as well as via Skype and phone; students can reserve a session or drop in, on a first-come, first-served basis. PsyD student Molly Conley is this summer's writing tutor. The schedule is posted online and on the door to the writing center, located in the library. Questions? Ch-ch-ch-changes....
Peter Eppig retires this month after more than thirty years on the faculty of the Department of Education, where he distinguished himself as founder and director of the Critical Skills program and as chairperson for twelve years. You can read more about Peter's career in the next issue of Notes.
Beginning phased retirement, Jane Miller, core faculty member in the Department of Education, steps down as director of the Elementary, Early Childhood, and Special Education Teacher Certification Program, although she'll continue as a half-time core faculty through spring 2015. Tom Julius, core faculty member, becomes director of the Teacher Certification/Integrated Learning Program.
Paula Denton and Teri Young will become core faculty in the Education Department. Paula was an adjunct faculty member in the 1990's, and most recently served as an affiliate faculty. Before that, she was director of program development and delivery at the Northeast Foundation for Children. Teri, who worked for the Vermont Department of Education and was a school administrator in Brooklyn, New York, has taught several courses as an adjunct faculty member since 2010. She developed the new holistic special education concentration.
Taryn Fisher, a new faculty member in the Department of Management, brings more than fifteen years experience working for blue-chip companies including Fidelity Investments, Procter & Gamble, The Gillette Company, and Harvard Private Capital, primarily focused on value chain, services procurement, and outsourced manufacturing. Jean Kayira, a new core faculty member in the Department of Environmental Studies, will shortly defend her dissertation at the University of Saskatchewan, where she is completing her doctoral degree in Environment and Sustainability.
Steve Neun, AUNE's vice president for academic affairs, leaves AUNE at the end of June to become the founding dean of the College of Business, Information Systems, and Human Services at Lock Haven University, Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. Also leaving for other pastures are Cary Jardine, research and instruction librarian for thirteen years, who will become the Keene Public Library's digital services librarian, and Patricia Huebner, administrative assistant in the registrar's office for twenty years.
Megan Murphy, core faculty member in the Department of Applied Psychology and director of the Marriage and Family Therapy doctoral program, leaves to become the director of the Marriage and Family Therapy master's program for Purdue University, Calumet.

Democratic Republic of Congo Delegation Discusses Collaboration with ES Department
A delegation from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), including its Ministry of Higher Education and Kasa Vubu University, spent a day this week at AUNE, discussing possible collaboration with AUNE's Department of Environmental Studies (ES), including student and faculty exchanges and potential research sites.

AUNE Plants Maplewood Demonstration Garden
Cheshire County has asked the Community Garden Connections to plant and manage the Maplewood Demonstration Garden in Westmoreland, New Hampshire, as a pilot project for this year's growing season. Read more here.

Nature-Based Education Blossoms
A conference called In Bloom: Promising Practice in Nature-Based Early Childhood drew more than one hundred participants to AUNE on May 15. AUNE is well ahead of the pack in nature-based education. Next up: A series of courses on nature-based early childhood education planned for this summer and coming fall. It starts with Nature-Based Early Childhood Curriculum, July 8-12. Learn more.

Condee Jumps into CPC Fellowship
