La Sonnambula

Vincenzo Bellini

November 1 (Saturday), 12:30 pm

A classical Italian opera performance. This operatic gem from one of the great masters of melody is a benchmark of extraordinary vocalism. The title role of the sleepwalking girl was composed for the greatest diva of the day, Giuditta Pasta (for whom Bellini also wrote the tragic role of Norma). The part requires a rare combination of innocence, charm, and breathtaking vocal virtuosity. Deeper than a comedy, but in no way a tragedy, La Sonnambula reaches its conclusion through genuine, poignant character development, rather than by intrigue or farce. This operatic gem from one of the great masters of melody is a benchmark of extraordinary vocalism.

La Commedia di Dante in Italiano ON ZOOM 2025

November 4 and 11 (Tuesdays) 11:30am–12:30pm EST

Meetings are twice monthly for one hour and conducted entirely in Italian. We are currently working on Canto XXI of Purgatorio. Greed goes on and on. Dante in Italiano is sponsored by Società Dante Alighieri of New York City Inc. The group is dedicated to studying the entire Divina Commedia and has been meeting since January 2018. Each canto is read aloud in the original, then translated/paraphrased into standard Italian as we discuss the text and related commentary. The pace is relaxed with some cantos taking two sessions and others three or more. No deadlines. No rush. We are serious readers, but this is not an academic program. Our Lectura Dantis is designed for lovers of Dante and the Italian language. Everyone, of all ages and backgrounds, is welcome to join. Members of the academic, visual arts, music, opera and publishing communities are particularly welcome. The Commedia reading group requires sufficient fluency to read and speak standard Italian. If you are interested in joining Dante in Italiano, please send an email with your phone number and a good time to call to danteinitalianonyc@yahoo.com We will get back to you quickly with the link to join the discussion. Creativity and World War II Italian POWs in the United States

On view through November 26

9:00am to 5:00pm weekdays

The exhibition, co-curated by Laura E. Ruberto and Joseph Sciorra, presents creative work made by Italian soldiers who were imprisoned by the Allied forces during World War II, focusing on those held in the United States. These objects, often made from salvaged materials, ranged in size from a small inlaid ring to a large Catholic chapel with a 65-foot bell tower. There is no archive or collective depository about World War II Italian prisoners of war in Allied hands. To document this creative work, the exhibit pulls from research completed by Ruberto (Berkeley City College), including historical photographs, rare remaining artifacts, oral testimonies, written accounts, family memories, and private collections.

Piero Manzoni: Total Space

Now through April 13, 2026

Through the extraordinary generosity of Fondazione Piero Manzoni and Hauser & Wirth, Magazzino Italian Art has received the gift of two immersive environments conceived by Manzoni in 1961, at a date when conceptualism and installation art were only starting to appear on the art world’s horizon, marking a singular, conceptually driven contribution to the evolving language of installation art in Italy. In 1957, searching for what he described as a “new language” and “total transformation,” Piero Manzoni began to create Achromes: works made of gesso on canvas, in which white had no allusive or symbolic value but was a colorless surface. As he continued the series, he experimented further with the construction of “neutral” spaces using materials that included kaolin, cotton wool, polystyrene, synthetic fibers, and fur.

This event will be held at Magazzino Italian Art, at the Robert Olnick Pavilion,

2700 Route 9, Cold Spring, NY

Admission: Open to the public

Fee: $20.00 Adult, $10.00 Senior, $10.00 Student, $5.00 Child 5-10 years old. Free for Amici di Magazzino. Purchase tickets online on web site below.
