Giulia Riccò, The Italian Colony of São Paulo

Giulia Riccò will present her new book, The Italian Colony of São Paulo: Race, Class, and Cultural Capital in Brazil (2025), which argues that Italians first became racialized as white in São Paulo, Brazil, at the turn of the twentieth century. Whereas Italians in the US struggled with xenophobia, in São Paulo Italians became associated with ideas of whiteness, modernization, and civilization.

A Deep Dive into Italy’s Greatest Wines in the Heart of Manhattan

Hoboken Italian Festival
September 4 to 7 (Thursday to Sunday), 1:00 to 10:00pm
The Hoboken Italian Festival is a four-day festival of music, food, and fun, located along Sinatra Drive between 1st Street to 3rd Street. No day is greater, however, than Saturday, our “feast” day. That day the 800-pound statue of the Madonna Dei Martiri, or Madonna of the Martyrs, is carried through the streets of Hoboken.

Teo Ricciardella at the Hoboken Italian Festival

Performing talent Italian tenor Teo Ricciardella was born in Puglia, Italy. In 2000, at the age of thirteen, he immigrated to the United States of America, where he began his classical career. A Dance and Drumming Workshop
The Feast of The Black Madonna
September 7 (Sunday), 5:00 to 8:00pm
Featuring dancers and artists, this powerful journey will introduce and transport the audience to a time and place where an unbroken and ancient tradition continues today with folk music, processions, devotional drumming, and dance. It will feature Alessandra Belloni's field research taken during her most recent pilgrimage in Campania in August 2024 with her students. It will provide a panoramic view of the sacred sites of the Black Madonna in this region, known in the Italian folk tradition as the “Seven Sisters.” Participants, your tambourine or frame drum should be at least 12 inches wide.

La Commedia di Dante in Italiano ON ZOOM 2025

Meetings are twice monthly for one hour and conducted entirely in Italian. We are currently working on Canto XIX of Purgatorio. We seem to have arrived at Greed at an opportune moment. Dante in Italiano is sponsored by Società Dante Alighieri of New York City. The group is dedicated to studying the entire Divina Commedia and has been meeting since January 2018. Each canto is read aloud in the original and then translated/paraphrased into standard Italian as we discuss the text and related commentary. The pace is relaxed with some cantos taking two sessions and others three or more. No deadlines. No rush. We are serious readers, but this is not an academic program. Our Lectura Dantis is designed for lovers of Dante and the Italian language. Everyone, of all ages and backgrounds, is welcome to join. Members of the academic, visual arts, music/opera, and publishing communities are particularly welcome. The Commedia reading group requires sufficient fluency to read and speak standard Italian. EXHIBITIONS
Creativity and World War II Italian POWs in the United States
On view through October 2025

The exhibition, co-curated by Laura E. Ruberto and Joseph Sciorra, presents creative work made by Italian soldiers who were imprisoned by the Allied forces during World War II, focusing on those held in the United States. These objects, often made from salvaged materials, ranged in size from a small inlaid ring to a large Catholic chapel with a 65-foot bell tower. There is no archive or collective depository about World War II Italian prisoners of war in Allied hands. To document this creative work, the exhibit pulls from research completed by Ruberto (Berkeley City College), including historical photographs, rare remaining artifacts, oral testimonies, written accounts, family memories, and private collections.

Ongoing exhibition presenting a comprehensive panorama on the artistic practice of twelve artists associated with the Arte Povera movement
Giovanni Anselmo, Alighiero Boetti, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Luciano Fabro, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, Marisa Merz, Giulio Paolini, Pino Pascali, Giuseppe Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto, and Gilberto Zorio.
This exhibition represents the Olnick Spanu Collection’s core of postwar Italian art, allowing the space to be an environment solely devoted to this generation of Italian artists.
