Sexuality and Cancer
By Domonique Noel,
Community Cancer Control Specialist

According to the National Cancer Institute, cancer is defined as “...a disease in which some of the body’s cells grow uncontrollably and spread to other parts of the body” (2021). Although it is not often talked about, cancer can have a significant impact on a person’s body image and sexuality. Body image refers to a person’s perception of the integrity of their physical body (Hungr et al., 2017), and is often tied to one’s internal sense of femininity or masculinity.

Research Corner:
Project HERO
Project HERO is an NIH-funded research study under the direction of Dr. Anita Kinney. Project HERO is investigating the effect of body-mind training programs on health and well-being in senior men with a previous diagnosis of cancer. There are over 9 million cancer survivors that are 55 years of age or older. Cancer survivors in this age group have unique challenges coping with late and long-term effects of having had a cancer diagnosis and treatment, coupled with age-related declines and comorbidities. This may influence their ability to engage in lifestyle interventions because of slower post-treatment recovery, increased functional limitations, and other quality of life (QOL) impairments. Project HERO participants attend either a body training or body mind session twice a week for 12 weeks in a class with other men who have been diagnosed with cancer. Past study subjects have greatly enjoyed their participation in the study. In fact, several participants have shared their positive experience in the study.

Welcome to the ScreenNJ Navigation Team
Patient navigation (PN) can help people at any point in the cancer continuum, from prevention to treatment and survivorship. The Patient Navigator supports the improvement of patient outcomes through implementation of evidence-based patient navigation services for cancer screening at ScreenNJ partner sites throughout New Jersey.  We find it to be an effective strategy and a critical part of decreasing cancer incidence and mortality.

The focus of the ScreenNJ Patient Navigation program is prevention and early detection of lung cancer and colorectal cancer, as well as breast, prostate, cervical, melanoma, HPV-related cancers, and hereditary/genetic counseling. Patient Navigators will provide guidance to some of the most at-risk patients, helping clients to prevent cancer, screen for cancer, and gain access to timely and high-quality follow-up cancer care.  Patient Navigators will offer individualized assistance to patients to facilitate access to cancer screening. They will serve as a key resource for developing and expanding patient access to care resources and overcoming barriers to screening.

ScreenNJ Patient Navigators are assigned to specific regions across the state connecting with health care providers, community partners and patients to facilitate awareness of cancer screening, increase screening demand and patient access to screening.

Grants/Program Manager
Arnold P. Gold Foundation
Hello! I work as Grants/Programs Manager for the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, a nonprofit that champions humanism in healthcare, defined as compassionate, collaborative, and scientifically excellent care. Through grants, awards, and educational programs, we empower experts, learners, and leaders to create systems and cultures that target barriers to such care. Right now, we're planning a virtual conference for May 2022 and are launching several annual programs: The Gold Student Summer Fellowship, the Hope Babette Tang Humanism in Healthcare Essay Contest, and the Gold Humanism Honors Society's Thank a Resident Day (Feb. 25) and Solidarity Week for Compassionate Patient Care (Feb 14-18).

I'm passionate about connecting individuals to resources that address locally-identified community needs. I'm eager to apply my experience to help the CCAB foster partnerships between cancer researchers, community outreach staff, and communities across my home state.

Impact Council Updates
Arts & Media
Impact Council
Citizen Scientist Clinical Trials Impact Council
The Arts & Media group has been added to the community engagement website. Impact council members have been establishing the platform's vision and collaborating on site layout and content areas, as well as starting conversations with arts organizations around NJCentral among the current discussions include which community groups to create on the platform. The platform aims to serve as a space for all residents of New Jersey, so special attention is being given to identifying cultural, regional, and language, and disease-specific groups, especially where health- and cancer-related disparities are present. Community leaders for each group are to be considered for invitation to the platform, so they may assist the group in guiding content and development.
The second cohort of the Citizen Scientist group graduated on January 19th. This group will provide a community voice to Cancer Institute researchers by working closely to inform different aspects of studies. In addition to working with researchers on studies, all Citizen Scientist Impact Council members will be invited to a members only monthly Research Café.

If you are interested in participating in the next Citizen Scientist training program please contact: outreach@cinj.rutgers.edu.
