FEBRUARY 2024

This month, and throughout the year, we honor the contributions of Black Americans who have shaped our nation and have fought for a just society for all.

Shirley Chisholm was an integral leader in the fight for racial justice, women's rights, and for improved access to food for families across the country. As the first Black woman elected to Congress, Chisholm served seven terms in which she advocated for and helped start several anti-poverty programs. She helped expand what was then called the food stamp program (now known as SNAP) and helped create the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), which today helps families across the nation access food, nutrition support, and health care referrals.

Chisholm's legacy has left a lasting impact, and demonstrates how food security is essential to justice movements across the nation. You can read more about her life and work on the National Archives website.

Get Your Heart in the Game!

You, your family, and your friends are invited to join us for a fundraising night at 100 Nickel/Chipper's Lanes as we kick off our Get Your Heart in the Game campaign! This event will be held on Sunday, March 3 from 3 pm - 6pm. Be sure to mention that you are with FISH so that 20% of proceeds from your bowling, laser tag, AND food/beverage orders are donated back! Feel free to drop-in or reserve a lane online in advance.

Get Your Heart in the Game (formerly called “March Madness”) is a time where we highlight the importance of our monthly giving program. Monthly donations are an easy, budget-friendly way to provide reliable, sustained funds for our operations and programming.

Your support helps families navigate their path to self-sufficiency:

"I am not where I want my family to be, but we are getting there. Every time we have had a struggle or a setback, Broomfield FISH has helped us get back to the top. We are truly grateful for everyone and everything they do for us." - A 2023 participant

Thank You For Sharing the Love!

We want to share our gratitude for those who signed up to host a drive or raise awareness about donations for FISH this February for Love Your Neighbor! The support of our community is vital now more than ever, as we are seeing more families come in to shop and more food go out the door than ever before. We need everyone's help to keep our shelves from going empty.

A special thank you to those below, and anyone else who may not have officially registered for Love Your Neighbor.

Final Call for a King Soopers'

Fight Hunger Bag!

For every Fight Hunger bag sold at our local Broomfield King Soopers stores (1150 Us Highway 287, 12167 Sheridan Blvd, and 2355 W 136th Ave) through the end of February, $1 will be donated to FISH! You can also maximize the impact of your grocery shopping--with no cost to you--by linking your King Soopers Rewards Card to Broomfield FISH. That way a portion of every grocery visit will help feed families and fuel hope! Learn more here.

Skyestone Calendars Raise More Than $1,000

We want to give a huge thank you to the Skyestone community and Skyestone Connects for their 2024 calendar fundraiser for FISH! Linda Berteau, co-leader of Skyestone Connects, recently presented FISH with a $1,352 gift from the sales of 149 calendars! The group has supported FISH with their calendar sales for several years, and we are so grateful to be a beneficiary of this program. The calendars turn out beautifully every year--a special shout-out to Joan Baker for designing the calendar and for her stunning cover photo!

Need an Oil (Ex)Change?

The folks at Doc Automotive will give you $10 off any service up to $50 for each bottle of cooking oil you bring in to donate to FISH. You can give back while getting a discount - it's a win-win! Thank you to the Cogley family, the owners of Doc Automotive, for their partnership in feeding families and fueling hope. They came up with a creative and generous way to adopt our cooking oil shelf, and we cannot thank them enough for their support!

We are so grateful for donations to our marketplace, and hope these provide some helpful tips as you are checking your pantry or shopping at the grocery store!

Can I donate fruits and vegetables from my home garden?

Volunteer Spotlight

Karen Simon

Karen first joined FISH in April of 2020, and has been a such wonderful member of our Wednesday and Friday morning teams! We are so grateful for all she does to make sure our marketplace is organized and running smoothly for our families. Karen shares, "It is a fun environment and it feels great to give back to my own community." Karen has called Broomfield home for 29 years, and raised her two daughters here. When she is not busy helping out here at FISH, she enjoys reading, long walks, trips to the mountains, and traveling to visit friends and family. Thank you for all you do for FISH and our neighbors in need, Karen!

Staff Spotlight

Bill Smith

Assistant Food Operations Manager

Bill, our Assistant Food Operations Manager, has been with FISH for 5 years. He brings a happy, welcoming energy to our marketplace while working alongside our staff, volunteers, and participants--you can always catch him wearing a cheerful tropical shirt for our “Aloha Fridays!" He also helps run our Adopt A Shelf program, which is integral to keeping our marketplace stocked for our participants. His favorite part about being at FISH is helping to take care of neighbors. When he is not at FISH, he enjoys travelling!
