Township Celebrates Preservation Of Abolition Hall

The Whitemarsh community on Tuesday celebrated the preservation of Abolition Hall and thanked The Karabots Foundation for the incredible generosity that made it possible.

Whitemarsh Supervisor Chair Laura Boyle-Nester and Whitemarsh Art Center President Dan Zuena were joined by a representative from Congresswoman Madeleine Dean’s office, State Senator Vincent J. Hughes, State Representative Mary Jo Daley and Montgomery County Commissioners Chair Valerie A. Arkoosh in thanking Nicholas and Athena Karabots.

“Today to the history of this place, we add the legacy of Nicholas and Athena Karabots,” said Supervisor Chair Boyle-Nester. “Thanks to their tremendous generosity, the preservation of this unique property and the memories of the women, men and families who sought freedom and those who fought to provide it will continue to be shared.”

As a gesture of gratitude, the Township presented Mrs. Karabots with a key to Whitemarsh.

The Karabots foundation donated $2 million toward the purchase of the property that is home to Abolition Hall. The Whitemarsh Art Center will eventually relocate to the property.

2023 Will Bring Changes To Trash and Yard Waste Collection

Beginning January 2, there will be two changes to the trash and yard waste collection schedule in the Township.

Yard waste will be collected on Mondays for all households. That is a change from the current collection on Wednesday.

Households that currently have trash collected on Mondays will have it collected on Wednesdays beginning on January 2.

J.P. Mascaro has mailed an information flyer to each household with these changes and more information on trash, recycling and yard waste collection.

Help Restore Land On Mathers Mill Lane This Sunday

Volunteers are needed to help with the restoration of a flood-prone plot of land across from Mathers Mill on Mathers Lane this Sunday.

The Township is partnering with Colonial Canopy Trees to replant a small forested area, which will help mitigate flood damage by absorbing water, stabilizing the soil and providing nourishment and habitat for wildlife.

Volunteers are needed. The work will occur between 10 a.m. and noon. Dress appropriately and please bring a shovel, clippers and gloves, if you have them.

PECO: Be Alert For Payment Scams

With the holiday season here, PECO is reminding customers to stay alert for potential payment scams targeting utility customers. Scammers are using the holiday season to trick utility customers into providing their personal or financial information and making false payments under the pretense of keeping their service active.

PECO is urging customers to be on the lookout for impersonators seeking to steal money and personal information. Scammers posing as PECO employees, or an affiliate will call customers from a number that appears to be from PECO and threaten to turn off service unless payment is made.

PECO is offering the following tips:

·   PECO will never demand immediate payment, nor require one specific form of payment, such as a prepaid card, bitcoin, or third-party digital money transfers. For approved payment methods and options, visit peco.com/payment.

·   Never grant anyone access to your home who claims to be from PECO, or a contractor working for PECO, unless the person has proper identification.

·   Do not provide your PECO account information or your PECO bill to anyone. A real PECO representative will have the account information they need when they call.

Check your printed bill or log on to PECO.com or the PECO mobile app and check your account status, balances, payments, and any supplier information.
