Johnny Maintains a Positive Attitude
Communities In Schools of the Dallas Region, Inc. (CISDR) first started working with "Johnny" in kindergarten. He had a positive, caring, and happy personality, greeting everyone with a smile. Throughout the years, CISDR has worked closely with Johnny and his family. Johnny has undergone numerous surgeries over the years, and continues to partake in extensive weekly check-ups to ensure his well-being. CISDR staff help make sure that, despite his critical health issues, Johnny still has a chance to stay in school and keep his grades up.
Despite his many medical concerns, Johnny maintains a positive and optimistic attitude. He has the desire to care more for others than for himself. If a student is made fun of or picked on, he will be the first line of defense, even if it causes him to get into trouble. He is observed to be a leader and speaks up for what he believes. With Johnny, even on the worst days, the "sun is always shining." He finds a way to shift his perspective and see the best out of every situation. Consistency has played a vital role in helping Johnny maintain a positive outlook, with caring adults such as his mother, teachers, and CISDR staff shaping the way he views his circumstances.
Since his most recent surgery, Johnny has been determined and ready to participate in school activities. Currently, he forms a part of CISDR's 5th grade Futuristic Club. This club focuses on careers, goals, and job descriptions. Johnny makes sure everyone is included and is actively involved in discussions. He provides ideas to share with his peers and everyone seems to chime in and help him out when necessary. Given his happy demeanor through thick and thin, CISDR would like to honor Johnny and his family for never giving up.
Vibha Kite Festival Benefits CISDR
Vibha Dallas, a volunteer-driven organization that works hard to ensure that every child has access to quality education, has selected CISDR as the local beneficiary of their 16th Annual Kite Flying Festival. This free family-friendly event will be held at Northlake College (5001 N MacArthur Blvd, Irving, Texas 75038) on Saturday, May 4, 2019 from 2pm to 8pm. Bring a kite or buy one there. You are also welcome to bring a picnic basket or purchase food from one of our many vendors.
This year's festival will feature a high-energy fashion show as well as performances by community members and local dance schools. The first 200 kids will have a chance to learn about the science and history behind kites, all while making their own. Face painting, henna, temporary tattoos, a bounce house and a raffle will add to the festivities. A cozy marketplace will feature vendors with interesting wares for sale. We welcome all members of the community to join us at this free and fun event.
Ryan Signs Up as Presenting Sponsor
Once again this year, Ryan has signed on as Presenting Sponsor for the CISDR Golf Tournament. Ryan Chairman & CEO and CISDR Board Member G. Brint Ryan says, "We became involved with Communities In Schools a few years ago and have been very impressed with the positive results this organization has achieved for our schoolchildren. Having on-site coordinators at each school served makes a noticeable difference, and instead of dropping out of school, the students benefiting from CISDR stay in school 99% of the time."
Now in its 8th year, the CISDR Golf Tournament has become our largest fundraising event, thanks in large part to the support from organizations and individuals like you. Please join Presenting Sponsor Ryan, Title Sponsor Flowserve, many others on Monday, September 30, 2019 at Hackberry Creek Country Club in Irving, Texas. Contact us at 214-827-0955 ext. 267 or cisdev@cisdallas.org for information on available sponsorships, or with any questions about helping out with or playing in the 8th Annual CISDR Golf Tournament.
