Community college district wins top mark for bond transparency

The Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District received a “100%” perfect score from the San Diego Taxpayers Educational Foundation for transparency related to its $398 million Proposition V bond program. The college district was one of only two public education districts in the San Diego region this year – out of 27 evaluated – to receive a perfect score on the nonprofit’s 2022 SDCTA School Bond Transparency Scorecard. The rating topped last year’s score of 96% and 2020’s score of 93%. GCCCD and GUHSD are the only districts over the past three years to have received a score of 100%. Read More

Grossmont College Math Department’s New Initiatives Add Up to Student Success 

A significant restructuring of Grossmont College’s Math Department added specialized student support including a Math Jam bootcamp and mental health resources. The changes bring the department under full compliance with AB 705, a state law that immediately places California community college students into transfer-level coursework in English and math when they enroll. Read More

Cuyamaca College names new Dean of Learning & Technology Resources

Cuyamaca College has named Jessica Hurtado as the new Dean of Learning & Technology Resources. Hurtado comes to the Rancho San Diego campus after helping lead online student support for the California Virtual Campus (CVC), a $20 million initiative to meet the online distance education and online support services needs of the 116-college system. In her new post at Cuyamaca, Hurtado will oversee instructional computer facilities, instructional media services, the campus library, instructional technology support and training, tutoring, and web development. Read More

Three governing board members sworn in; Debbie Justeson to remain board president 

Debbie Justeson, who won re-election to the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District governing board with nearly 66% of the vote in November, has been unanimously selected by her colleagues to serve a second term as president of the governing board in 2023. At its meeting last month, the governing board also re-elected member Brad Monroe to serve as vice president and Elena Adams to serve another term as board clerk. The appointments came after Justeson, Monroe and new board member Desiree Klaar were officially sworn in to new four-year terms. Klaar, who was elected to her first term in November, represents District 1, which includes Santee, much of Lakeside and parts of El Cajon. Read More



WHAT'S UP WITH PROP V?

Here are some quick updates on construction projects funded by Proposition V, a $398 million bond measure approved by East County voters in 2012. The projects are modernizing existing facilities and building new ones to meet student and community needs. 


Grossmont College: 

» Master Pump: Meetings are being held regarding the installation of a central booster pump house to provide reliable water pressure for the campus.

» Arts & Communications Complex: Work on Phase 2 is underway, with an estimated construction start date of August 2025. The phase will include demolishing Buildings 21, 25, 26, and building a new multistory structure to accommodate the Music and the Theatre Arts departments.

» Liberal Arts & Business Tech Complex: Construction work on Buildings 51 and 55 is estimated to begin in October 2023. Construction work on Buildings 52, 53 and 54 will be completed in two phases. The first phase is complete, and the second phase is underway.

» Science, Math, & Career Tech Complex: Phase 2 work is underway with an April 2023 anticipated completion date.


» Orchestra Shell: This project is in the closeout phase.


Cuyamaca College: 

» Building F: Construction is delayed due to the extended timeframe for state approvals.

» Building A: Work is underway, with an anticipated project completion date of March 2025.

» Student Services Building: The building is complete with a few minor fixtures left to be installed. Furniture is being delivered and installed.
