The One School - One Book Event DC West Elementary held was designed to be a shared reading event for all participants, preKindergarten through 5th grade and their families. During the month, families read the preassigned chapters little by little at home. During the school day, children answered trivia questions, talked about the characters, cared for a hamster named Humphrey (like the main character), participated in book related events and activities that keep the children talking. Engaging in these activities took reading as a family to a new level and brought together a firm literacy foundation. The final event was a school wide Family Night with games, activities, and food revolving around the main character from The World According to Humphrey.
