CGOA’s Jazz Collective Big Band Celebrates Valentine’s Day

CGOA’s Jazz Collective Big Band performs Friday, February 10, 8-10 pm at the Elks Lodge in Hood River (304 Cascade Ave.)  Tickets are $10 for adults, and those under 18 are free. Come listen or dance to some great jazz classics and enjoy a drink from the Elks bar upstairs.  You’ll hear familiar tunes from Stan Kenton, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and Count Basie.

Another jazz dance is coming up on March 24 at the Elks, and on April 28 and 30, the Jazz Collective will perform a program of Afro-Cuban fusion at Wy’east Middle School Performing Arts

Center.  The last jazz concert of the season will be June 17 in Jackson Park. Tickets and information at www.gorgeorchestra.org.

CGOA Presents Young Voices, Music by a New Generation of Composers

The Gorge Sinfonietta is known for diverse and exciting programs, from collaborations with outstanding artists to innovative new music. The orchestra’s fondness for pushing boundaries will be on full display as it presents a program of premieres by an outstanding group of young composers on february 17 and 19.

The program includes John Mackey’s “Under the Rug,” a joyous, tongue-in-cheek concert opener that describes a 1950s housewife under siege by an army of dust bunnies. Mackey takes the familiar sound of early television theme songs to unexpected places. Besides being an orchestral showcase, “Under the Rug” is buoyant and catchy. As the composer says, “You can dance to it!”

Los Angeles based composer Austin Wintory has received a large number of awards and accolades for his exciting music for movies and videogames. He was the first game composer to be nominated for a Grammy. That nomination was for his score to the 2012 game “Journey.” Wintory has turned his game score into an extended concert piece called “Traveler: A Journey Symphony.” Traveler was recorded last year by the London Symphony Orchestra. It features a concerto-like solo that was written for studio musician superstar Tina Guo. The Sinfonietta’s Principal Cello Michelle Edwards will play the solo in the local performance. The Sinfonietta’s performance of “Traveler” will be the US premiere performance.

While certainly not a “young composer,” conductor Mark Steighner was commissioned before the pandemic to write a memorial piece in honor of Sinfonietta violist Erica Roulier’s father-in-law. “Turn, and Start for Home” will receive its premiere performance in the February concerts, featuring Principal Violist Jim Garrett.

“Vanitas” is the name for a genre of painting that was developed centuries ago. Vanitas paintings often include symbols of time passing and reminders of life’s brevity. Composer Cody Matthew Johnson and poet Andrew Smithers created their “Vanitas” for speaker and orchestra as a meditation on current events in America. Somewhere between poetry and rap, the text of “Vanitas” explores the social and political discourse and conflicts of recent years in a thoughtful and challenging way. Its language is direct, moving and mesmerizing.

Conductor Mark Steighner worked with Cody Johnson for several months to arrange the music

for orchestra, and the Gorge Sinfonietta will present its world premiere. The composer and writer will be in attendance. It’s a great opportunity for local audiences to meet one of the rising star composers in media.

The Young Voices concerts will be Friday, February 17 at 7 PM and Sunday, February 19 at

2 PM at the Wy’east Middle School Performing Arts Center, 3000 Wy’east Rd in Odell.

Tickets are $25 adults ($15 for CGOA Members), $5 youth ages 10-17, and free for kids under

10. Tickets are available at gorgeorchestra.org. A limited number of $5 tickets are available for patrons with Oregon Trail/SNAP cards.

Hi Mt. Hood and Columbia River Gorge Partners,

Happy 2023! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and are excited about what the new year has to bring. In this month's newsletter, we have a bunch of updates for you about events to look forward to, opportunities to apply for, and feedback to provide.

The big news is that the Governor's Conference on Tourism for 2023 is now open for registration. This year's conference will take place in Portland on April 3-5. Registration details can be found here. Scholarships are available through Travel Oregon. We might be able to sponsor some additional scholarships, so reach out if the cost of attending is prohibitive. If you have not attended before, this conference is the perfect educational experience for newcomers to the industry as well as those who have been around for a while.

Other exciting news is that the Mt. Hood and Columbia River Gorge region received a capacity grant from Travel Oregon which will allow us to fund another year of an Americorps RARE placement to support our work. Other capacity grants were awarded in our region for Explore Troutdale, Visit Hood River, and The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce.

Thanks!

Lizzie

P.S. Keep your eyes peeled in the next couple of weeks for our biennial stakeholder survey to go live. The data we collect in the survey is crucial for providing insights and direction for our biennial plan.

Second Program of the 2023 Regional History Forum at the Original County Courthouse

“Vineyards and Wineries of the Columbia Gorge” is the title of the February 11 program at the Original Wasco County Courthouse, 410 West 2nd Place in The Dalles. Saturday’s program begins at 1:30 p.m. and is second in a month-long series of presentations. History After Hours, sponsored by Wasco County Historical Society, will also take place at the Courthouse. At 3:30 p.m. people from area historical organizations and museums will share current activities and future plans. Refreshment time between the 1:30 presentation and the 3:30 gathering will feature a History After Hours tradition: a birthday cake celebrating Oregon’s Feb. 14 statehood anniversary. The Columbia Gorge wine region grew from one winery in 1980 to 40 in a 20-year period. Much of the credit for this growth is due to the work of Saturday’s speaker, Lonnie Wright. He gained vineyard expertise in the 1970s, came to his Mill Creek vineyard in 1982, established his own winery in 2001, and started his own vineyard management company, working with others in the industry to define the Columbia Gorge wine region. He is well-known for his estate-grown, limited production boutique wines. In 2014 Wright received the Oregon Wine Board’s lifetime achievement award.

Admission to the program is free but donations are welcome. There is a TV monitor on the ground floor of the 1859 courthouse to serve those unable to climb the stairs. Refreshments will be served after the program.

WASCO COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

History After Hours

Nine years ago the Wasco County Historical Society held the first History After Hours. It was intended to be an informal way for people who are on the various Boards and Committees of the historical organizations in The Dalles and surrounding area to get to know each other and give an update on their activities and future plans.

This year History After Hours will be at 3;30 on Saturday February 11, 2023 at the Original Wasco County Courthouse. (located behind the Chamber of Commerce Building) in The Dalles.

It will be hosted by the Wasco County Historical Society and the Original Wasco County Courthouse. You are invited to come share Oregon Birthday Cake after the Courthouse program or come at 3:30 for the History after Hours gathering only.

The Scheduled Courthouse program will begin at 1:30. “ Vineyards and wineries of the Columbia Gorge”  will be presented by Lonnie Wright. You are welcome to attend the presentation and then stay for History after Hours
