A word to you

from Asheville City Councilwoman Maggie Ullman

March 21, 2025

This information is brought to you in collaboration with Asheville City Council and NC General Assembly Members

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has allocated $225,010,000 in Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funding to the City of Asheville to support long-term recovery efforts. The funds will address remaining unmet recovery efforts, and recently the City created a Draft Action Plan outlining specific areas of concern.

Your Asheville City Council shares a vision for our recovery that’s rooted in resilience, rising in unity, repairing with care, and ready for tomorrow. The funding from this CDBG-DR grant is a major kickstarter on our path to that vision.

Below is what I’ll be advocating for based on the findings of our Action Plan.

Strengthening Flood Resilience

(e.g. modernizing stormwater systems, green infrastructure, river bank stabilization, and multi-functional parks)

Increasing Infrastructure Resilience

(e.g. drinking water systems, roads, bridges, and greenways)

Enhancing Housing Resilience and Community Adaptation

(e.g. resilient and affordable multifamily housing, home elevation, and storm damage repair programs)

Supporting Economic Recovery and Risk Diversification

(e.g. access to funding, revitalizing flood-affected economic corridors, small business recovery, and arts and entertainment infrastructure improvements)

Expanding Emergency Preparedness and Public Awareness

(e.g. enhancing early warning systems, developing localized resilience hubs, and providing long-term community support)

The insightful contributions made by the Asheville community have helped us to put this Draft Action Plan in place for future preparation efforts and have been monumental in assisting in shaping a vision for the road to recovery. I’m asking you to use your voices again by taking part in the below community input sessions.

  • March 19 (Housing)

  • March 26 (Infrastructure)

I’m off to Washington DC next week to continue lobbying for our recovery efforts. Wish me luck! It’s my pleasure working for each of you as we continue to drive Asheville forward.
