Instructor Marilyn Lydic earned kudos for her technology support to students and teachers at a statewide conference this past summer. This recognition at the Technology in Adult Education Virtual Conference showcased her innovative approach during the pandemic.
Marilyn shared with participants the challenges IU13 Community Education faced with moving to remote learning and how technology coaching for both students and teachers helped. She spoke about the decision to use Schoology and Zoom for instruction, the procedure for identifying students new to remote learning, the coaching opportunities she offered them prior to class, the assistance offered to teachers during class time to help students access assignments, and tools she used to help students learn technology remotely. She also spoke about organizing materials in a learning management system to fit teacher's content and instructional needs.
Marilyn shares that the most rewarding part of her technology coaching experience has been witnessing the change in student's confidence level. When students joined her in a Zoom, the first words out of their mouths often were, “I can’t do technology,” but by the end of the meeting they exclaimed, “I CAN do technology!”

Tim Talk
IU13 Community Education Program Director
In July of 2022, we are planning to move the Lancaster-based Community Education program under one roof at Burle, in the same building at 1020 New Holland Avenue where IU13’s offices are located. Daytime and evening classes, which are currently held at Bright Side, Liberty Place, and McCaskey East, will all move to the same Burle location. In the new footprint, Community Education will have 9 classrooms, 7 offices/meeting rooms, a welcome lobby, and easy access to a lunchroom and outdoor courtyard. The move will make it easier for students to transition between levels, access much-needed resources in one location, and study in a facility that feels like a college campus. For teachers, advisors, and program assistants the move will make it easier to collaborate with each other and the leadership team. Community Education is planning to maintain one classroom at the new CareerLink on Manheim Pike, and will also make space available at Burle for CareerLink Case Managers to meet with students needing financial and case management support for employment and training purposes. We will have an open house in the fall of 2022 so all of you can see our new location.

Partnership with Twin Valley Coffee
The idea of starting conversations, opening lines of communication by the simple act of offering guest a cup of coffee, is not a new one. In fact, it dates back to the 1600's. Today coffee houses have become a staple of American culture, a necessary aspect of everyday life.
The Refugee Center is pleased to announce a collaboration with Twin Valley Coffee to offer our clients that cup of coffee and connection. Lynn and Lynne Burkholder, the owners of Twin Valley Coffee, are passionate not only about their family, but about supporting their community, and making the best cup of coffee. At the Refugee Center, we are also passionate about our community as well as about promoting a peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. We think this is the start of a beautiful friendship!
