For the 9th year in a row, there was no funding increase for adult education in the 2022-23 state budget, although other educational and training line items increased significantly. The PA Association for Adult Continuing Education (PAACE) advocated for a ten million dollar increase to the adult education line item and for passage of a fifteen million dollar fund to provide one-time grants to adult education providers, but neither funding request was approved. Adult Education agencies work with some of the most vulnerable people in our society, such as reentrants, refugees, immigrants, school dropouts, individuals living in poverty, and others who need a boost to obtain the education and training they need to get jobs with family-sustaining wages. At times like these, it’s important to remember and live by the words of Nelson Mandela, who said, “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” Advocates of the people served by adult education providers will rise again!
