When Elizabeth was 17, she gave birth to her first child. Unable to afford childcare and lacking family support, she dropped out of school to raise her baby. Elizabeth has struggled to find a job with a sustaining wage that does not require a GED.
After the birth of her fourth child, and now working two jobs to keep a roof over their heads, she decided to pursue her education. In 2019, she registered for high school equivalency (HSE) classes with IU13 Community Ed. Within a year, she passed four out of five subject tests but had three unsuccessful attempts to pass the final exam. Feeling like a failure, Elizabeth became depressed and did not attempt the test again in 2021.
Elizabeth shares, “It was hard battling with everything inside, but with my counselor’s help, I overcame my fear of failing again and in January 2022 made the appointment for my reading test.” Elizabeth took her final test on February 25 and passed. “Hard work pays off,” she said. “But the look on my kids’ faces and my feeling of self-accomplishment is what matters most.”

Twice per year, we survey our adult learners to gather their feedback about our classes. The results from the Spring 2022 survey are now available, and 99% of learners indicated that their instructor is always/usually a good teacher, 100% said their teacher is always/usually prepared for class, and 98.6% indicated their teacher always/usually helps them reach their goals. The comments from students were overwhelmingly positive. One student wrote, “Personally, I think we have the best teacher we could have. She is always there to help us and takes time for us to understand every subject.” Another student shared, “This class doesn't only help me prepare for the test, but the class also prepares me for life. I have learned so much from all subject areas that I didn't grasp effectively when I was in school years ago.”
I am so grateful for our exceptional teaching staff who demonstrate dedication, professionalism, high levels of expertise, and compassion daily.

For over 12 years, Lenny Walton has worked one-on-one with students taking High School Equivalency (HSE/GED) classes at IU13.
When a student can solve linear functions in mathematics, (a fancy way to create lines on a graph), they are sent to Lenny! He works with higher level students who are in the last stage of prep for the GED test.
We are so thankful to have Lenny working with us to help make a difference.
