Adult Education and Family Literacy (AEFL) week is a national initiative that raises awareness about the need and value of adult education and family literacy. One of the goals is to increase financial and societal support for adults with low literacy skills. This week also serves to celebrate and elevate businesses and educational programs–like IU13 Community Education—with media and the community. This year AEFL week took place from September 19-23.

Over the years, IU13 Community Education has touched the lives of many individuals, and we are honored to share a few quotes from successful alumni.
“Life is too short, so if there’s an opportunity, take it; you may not know what tomorrow brings,” Felicia, pictured lower left.
“It was hard battling with everything inside, but with my counselor’s help, I overcame my fear of failing again and in January 2022 made the appointment for my reading test,” Elizabeth, pictured, lower center.
“I received ongoing support from IU13 and my job trainer,” Jean, pictured, upper center.

I was invited to give a 1-minute presentation for the Lancaster Chamber’s September 22nd “15 in 15” event, during which 15 participants had 1 minute each to give a presentation on “Upskilling and Reskilling” followed by discussion. I shared the following:
Employers everywhere are asking, “How can I keep my current workforce and attract new employees?” According to a recent Fortune newsletter, “The primary reason people join and stay in a company or organization is not that they want to earn more money and reach a high level of status (although they enjoy both), but because they want to belong.”
Many employers have relied on the healthy immigrant and refugee population to fill hiring needs which can sometimes lead to communication breakdowns, thus contributing to employees not feeling part of the social group.
To help bridge the language and cultural divide, IU13 Community Education provides bilingual navigation, which is designed to help refugees and immigrants successfully integrate into their places of employment. IU13 Community Education also provides free English as a Second Language classes in the community and on-site fee-based Spanish and English classes for incumbent workers.
The ultimate goal of our services is to help workplaces become attractive environments where all employees can feel a sense of belonging and stay with a company rather than joining the great resignation.

Refugee Center Cell Phone Initiative
|
|
IU13 Bilingual Cultural Navigators work with refugee children and adults to connect them with social, educational, and medical opportunities that empower families. One of those opportunities includes access to a free phone or tablet. Included with the phone is 10G of unlimited calls, texts, and data as well as free monthly service for one year on AT&T or Verizon networks.
Refugees who have a Social Security number, a form of identification, and receive government benefits of any kind (such as food stamps, health insurance, etc.,) are eligible.

IU13 Community Education says farewell and best wishes to Refugee Center Coordinator, Khem Subedi, as he starts his own business.
We deeply miss Khem, but we’re happy that he has the opportunity to use his skills throughout the next stage of his life. Please join us in thanking Khem for his passion and dedication to Refugee Center programs and IU13 Community Education as a whole.
