MAS-SSF was pleased to participate in the December 13th Afghan Family Engagement Program hosted at the Salam Center. Nearly 90 adults and more than 60 children attended this five-hour community event focused on education, connection, and support.
For Adults
The program opened with welcoming remarks, followed by an identity theft prevention workshop presented by SETA. Representatives from MAS-SSF, SETA, and REDA also shared brief overviews of their services and encouraged attendees to pass along the information to extended family members and others in the community.
During the one-hour "How to Prevent Identity Theft" workshop, SETA staff provided clear, practical guidance on recognizing, preventing, and responding to identity theft. Participants learned what identity theft is, common ways personal information is compromised, and why some individuals and communities may be at greater risk. The session covered key prevention strategies including:
- Creating strong passwords
- Using two-factor authentication
- Safeguarding personal information online and offline
- Properly managing financial and government documents
Attendees also learned how to identify warning signs of fraud—such as suspicious emails, phone calls, and unauthorized account activity—and the steps to take if identity theft occurs, including placing fraud alerts or credit freezes and reporting incidents. Participants left with greater awareness, confidence, and practical tools to help protect their families.
For Children
Face painting, henna, and balloon animals kept children engaged while parents attended workshops and presentations.
The event also included time for socializing and browsing vendor tables featuring traditional Afghan clothing and other products.
