Opportunity to contribute to improving resilient housing for all

Background

As we age, we face increased vulnerability to a range of health-related issues. This can be exacerbated by extreme weather events and other situations such as the recent worldwide pandemic. This vulnerability increases when the indoor environmental quality of our housing is not conducive to support wellbeing and when we have limited disposable income to improve our living environment.

Funded by the Australian Research Council, researchers at The University of Adelaide are undertaking a multidisciplinary study to advance knowledge about indoor environments to improve the wellbeing of older people, especially those with lower income and those with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

The researchers are looking at the ways older people keep warm in cold weather, cool in hot weather, and aspects of house design that can make the homes more resilient to extreme weather, in order to develop affordable improvement strategies for all.

The research is a continuation of a recently completed project that studied portions of the Adelaide Metropolitan Area, the Adelaide Hills, the Iron Triangle and the Fleurieu Peninsula, and that resulted in the recent publication Thermal Comfort at Home: A guide for older South Australians

Invitation to take part...

The research team is now seeking people who are 65 years old or older and live in the council areas of Charles Sturt, Playford, Salisbury, Port Adelaide Enfield and Murray Bridge to participate in the research.

The study will include a series of focus groups and house monitoring surveys.
