Back-to-School Vaccinations

It is that time of year again; back to school! During this time, it is crucial to be updated on your child's vaccinations. Vaccinations play an essential role in creating a safeguard to the health and well-being of students, teachers, and the community as a whole. Having up-to-date immunizations creates a safer environment and reduces the risk of disease outbreaks. Vaccines protect against infectious diseases like measles, mumps, rubella, and whooping cough. Vaccines are safe! They are only given to children after a long and careful review by scientists, doctors, and healthcare professionals.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, many children fell behind on routine vaccinations. Now is the time to catch up! Ensuring your child is current for vaccinations will confirm their eligibility to participate in school, sports, daycare, and activities in the Fall.

If your teenager is college bound, remember to get vaccinations! Not only are they required for colleges to be vaccinated, but it also ensures the health and safety of students. People from across the country and even the world are heading to college in a new environment. Therefore, it is essential to keep them healthy with necessary vaccinations.

By prioritizing back-to-school vaccinations, we can cultivate a healthy and thriving educational community for everyone involved. Start scheduling now with the health department or your child's medical provider.

Kids should be in school. That’s why we support preventing the many diseases that used to take them out of it. You can help keep students on track by staying up to date with CDC's Routine Immunization Schedule!

Erica Waters is a Maternal Child Health Nurse and Foreign Travel Nurse, dividing her time between two departments. Erica helps community members prepare for international travel through vaccination and education. She also helps new moms and babies get settled together and provides health information and breastfeeding support.

“I love the people I work with,” Erica said. “Everyone is very supportive and encouraging. We play off each other’s strengths and are willing to help where needed. I wanted to come work for the Health Department because of the atmosphere. I have felt at home since day one, making wanting to go the extra mile in my work very easy.”

“Erica is an asset to our Maternal Child Health program. She is always willing to explore, learn, and provide evidence-based best practices to ensure our families are receiving valuable up-to-date parenting information and education. She is dedicated to the growth of our department services as we expand our program outreach into the community and surrounding communities to reach the populations we serve. Additionally, she is committed to our clients and strives to overcome potential barriers we may encounter through our program outreach and service delivery. She is a team-oriented employee and continues to go above and beyond to help our parents and program succeed. The Saline County Health Department is very fortunate to have compassionate employees such as Erica who put their heart and soul into the services they provide.” Sherri Dockter, Maternal Child Health Coordinator.

“Public health is an amazing place to be,” Erica said. “You get to develop relationships with community members and see the impact you make in your career. The groundwork you lay with your patients now can be the difference between them and an acute setting visit. So many services are available to community members that don’t get enough light shed on them. Your work matters here.”

Erica is working towards her BSN in addition to IBCLC. When she has free time, she loves to spend it with her three kids, husband, and dogs. They have a Chihuahua, Weimaraner, and a King Charles Cavalier. She likes to garden, cook and loves all things British TV and murder mysteries. Two of her kids are heading to KU this fall (ROCK CHALK!), and her youngest is a cheerleader at Central High School.

Erica has been a fantastic addition to our team in the clinic!

Erica is a very bright, funny, caring, and attentive nurse. Erica provides fantastic care to those having travel vaccine needs. The clinic appreciates all that Erica does!” Tammie Schneider, Nursing Clinic Coordinator.
