"The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members."

- Coretta Scott King

Dear Valued Members and Friends of Dermatology -

Do you ever have those moments where you are reminded of just how much good there is in this world?

The last two weeks have been like that for me. Every conversation I had with a Dermatologist or Industry Partner was focused on expanding the profession's impact in the circles we travel in, in the endless opportunities to support the communities we are a part of.

Now onto the highlights...there were many, but for this issue, I'll highlight three.

Dr. Michael Waul - if you don't know Dr. Waul, you should! He's on the Faculty at the University of California, San Francisco and immediately, I recognized his passion for good. In addition to sharing some insights into the Residency Program at UCSF, he also shared his role in expanding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Champion Training with residents.

In other big news, Cal Derm launched the Firefighter Skin Cancer Screening Program, the first of it's kind in California! In partnership with the American Academy of Dermatology and the Firefighter Cancer Support Network (FCSN), CalDerm will be holding a Firefighter Skin Cancer Screening on August 20-21, 2022, in Truckee, California. As you can imagine, the response has been phenomenal - and thanks to efforts by Dr. Ann Haas, Dr. Sima Torabian, CalDerm Board Members, and Scott Jennie (pictured below) with the FCSN, our screening program will help hundreds of firefighters.

And lastly - Dr. Ann Haas (pictured above)- and I met for lunch! If you don't know Dr. Haas, she is passionate, kind, and driven to advocate for those she cares about. Which, is simply, everyone. We spoke for hours about her passion for the profession, to provide exceptional care, and what drives her to be an advocate representing CalDerm in front of numerous stakeholders - the California Legislature, Speciality and National Associations (just to name a few). During my lunch with her, I understood what makes Dermatologists so incredibly special - it is the drive to not just do good, but to be the best representation of the profession in everything that one strives to do.

After all - "The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members."

I know for me - my definition of community has never been clearer. Thank you to all of you for being an inspiration for what is possible in the way we are present for others.

In gratitude,
