USF Creates New Small Business Accelerator through $500,000 Federal Grant
For over eight years, the USF Business Incubator has supported the economic development of the Will County region by fostering new business development. Now through a $500,000 U.S. Small Business Administration FY23 Congressional Community Project Grant supported by U.S. Congressman Bill Foster (D-Ill.), Joliet’s university has created a new USF Small Business Accelerator (fully funded by the grant) to specifically benefit small businesses in underserved categories in its ongoing efforts to build the region’s business landscape. A final round of applications will be accepted through September 20, 2023.

Leach College of Nursing Receives Grant Funding, Including $1.35M through ANEW
The USF Leach College of Nursing (LCON) was recently notified it was approved for another Advanced Nursing Education Workforce (ANEW) grant by the Health Resources and Services Administration. The grant will award the university approximately $1.35M over four years to help increase access to quality health and behavioral health care for underserved and rural areas in Illinois—especially in Will, Grundy and Cook counties. The project will build upon USF’s previous ANEW grant and will support the training and graduation of Family Nurse Practitioners and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners who will practice in underserved areas.

USF Hosts Joliet Chamber's New Educators Welcome Event
The Pat Sullivan Recreation Center on the main campus of USF served once again as the host site for the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry's annual New Educators Welcome event. Local leaders including State Representative Larry Walsh, Jr.; City of Joliet Mayor Terry D'Arcy; State Representative Natalie Manley; State Senator Meg Loughran Cappel; Will County Executive Jennifer Nertino-Tarrant, Will County Regional Superintendent Dr. Lisa Caparelli-Ruff and USF President Arvid, C. Johnson, Ph.D., welcomed new teachers and principals from the Joliet region as they prepared to resume classes this fall.

USF continues to be recognized by national ranking agencies as one of the top institutions of higher education in Illinois. WalletHub’s 2023 Best Colleges and Universities Rankings in which the agency ranked USF as one of the best schools in Illinois.

The rankings, which were compiled by comparing over 900 higher-education institutions across 30 key measures within seven categories that included Student Selectivity, Cost & Financing and Career Outcomes, named USF one of the top seven overall higher-education institutes in Illinois. WalletHub’s rankings also placed USF at #36 in the Midwest rankings, and ranked USF #1 in Illinois in the “Campus Safety” category for a third consecutive year.

USF Welcomes Br. Michael O’Neill McGrath for “Women in the Church” Lecture Series
USF has announced plans for its 2023 “Women in the Church” lecture series as for a closer look at Sr. Thea Bowman, FSPA through the eyes and art of Br. Michael O’Neill McGrath, OSFS. The lecture will take place on Tuesday, October 3, at 7 p.m. in San Damiano Hall, which is located on the third floor of the Motherhouse (520 Plainfield Road in Joliet). The lecture will be preceded by a special Franciscan Transitus Prayer at 6:30 p.m.) This free lecture is open to the community. University of St. Francis Introduces New Directors in Performing Arts 
With the start of the fall 2023 semester underway, the University of St. Francis (USF) welcomes three new leaders for its performing arts areas of choral (Youngham Lee), band (John Donovan) and orchestral (Sean Paul Mills) activities.

“The College of Arts and Sciences’ mission includes educating the whole person and integrating the liberal arts with cutting-edge career skills. I’m really excited we have three new music ensemble directors whose experience and expertise supports our college mission and contributes to the cultivation of Joliet’s artistic community with what promises to be a showcase of tremendous musical talents,” said Elizabeth McDermott, Ph.D., dean of the USF College of Arts and Sciences.
