Community News from the RRLIP Project | |
Hello Regina Community Members!
The Regina Region Local Immigration Partnership (RRLIP Project) strengthens and supports the community’s efforts to welcome, settle and integrate newcomers. In the last Newcomer Survey, we learned that many people do not know about programs in the community and/or how to access them.
The goal of these regular emails is to increase awareness of and access to relevant programs, services and events that enhance and support newcomer settlement in Regina.
.
Please share this information widely. Thank you so much!

Live Well with Chronic Conditions
Developed by Stanford University, this evidence-based program is a six- week group education workshop that meets once a week for two hours for individuals with chronic diseases. This program teaches people to be self-managers of their disease.
Live Well with Chronic Pain
This 6-week workshop series empowers participants to develop new skills and abilities to self-manage by building confidence to manage and cope with chronic pain. In a small-group setting, participants can give and receive support from others who share a similar experience. Group leaders are specially trained volunteer Peer Leaders who may also live with chronic conditions. Each weekly session is 2.5 hours and is open to individuals who live with chronic pain as well as caregivers for people experiencing chronic pain. FREE ONLINE WEBINAR - by IRMH
Immigrant and Refugee Mental Health Project
Social Support as a Buffer to Resettlement Stressors
Many newcomers can find themselves socially isolated in their country of resettlement, having left behind important relationships with friends, neighbours and community contacts. These relationships play important roles navigating stressors, navigating environments, and accessing resources. Thus, newcomers can be missing important resources to help them navigate new systems, and overcome resettlement stressors like language barriers, challenges with credential recognition, and un/under employment.
After attending you will be able to:
- understand the different ways in which relationships support coping with resettlement stressors
- distinguish between commonly used concepts in the study of relationships, like social support and social capital
- explain how social support influences mental health
- identify some potentially negative aspects of relationships and social networks in the resettlement process

SASK GOVERNMENT EXPANDING THE SINP
(SK. IMMIGRANT NOMINEE PROGRAM)
The province cites more than 16,000 job vacancies posted on SaskJobs and National Job Bank and over 112,000 job openings are forecasted over the next five years in Saskatchewan. To help fill the gap of the number of jobs compared to the number of workers, the provincial government has announced expanding the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program. The Existing Work Permit stream now includes 279 additional occupations.
Martensville-Warman MLA Terry Jenson made the announcement on behalf of the province, explaining that previously, only newcomers in high-skilled occupations and designated trades were eligible for the Existing Work Permit stream. This expansion is for intermediate and lower skilled jobs including farm labourers, truck drivers, retail sales, nurse aides and equipment operators. Newly eligible workers can now pursue permanent residency provided they have worked in Saskatchewan and meet the criteria which includes meeting language requirements and having a permanent, full-time job offer.
Executive Director of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress of Saskatchewan, Danylo Puderak, says many Ukrainians fled to Saskatchewan when the war began on an Emergency Travel visa, but the war continues almost two years later. He believes this expansion will help Ukrainians wanting to apply for permanent residency. “I know that from polls conducted with displaced Ukrainians a high percentage of them are looking to stay. We realize this war is not going to be over any time soon.”
Brennan Mill, a partner at Saskatoon Fire and Flood, a restoration and construction business, says they employ about 20 immigrant workers and he understands there will be more need in the future. “Within the next ten years a large percentage of the construction labour force will be retiring. In order for communities and businesses to continue to grow, the support of immigration into Canada is fundamental for future development.”

Dental Hygiene and Care
Appointments available:
October to June
Cost: $50
Oral cancer screening, dental and periodontal assessment, education, nutrition and tobacco cessation information, scaling and selective polish, x-rays, pit and fissure sealants, fluoride.
Other services cost 60% of the Sask. Dental Fee Guide.
Health and Wellness Day (formally Dental Day) was created in 2012 as a response to the barriers many people face within our community in accessing oral care. The name was changed this year as we have taken an interprofessional approach to address a holistic health and wellness approach. We recognize that there are many people who need help and we try to target those with the greatest need by partnering with the Ukrainian Canadian Congress of Saskatchewan, LINC program and the Regina Open Door Society.
