Community News from the RRLIP Project

Hello Regina Community Members!

The Regina Region Local Immigration Partnership (RRLIP Project) strengthens and supports the community’s efforts to welcome, settle and integrate newcomers. In the last Newcomer Survey, we learned that many people do not know about programs in the community and/or how to access them.

The goal of these regular emails is to increase awareness of and access to relevant programs, services and events that enhance and support newcomer settlement in Regina.

Please share this information widely. Thank you so much!

You can reach out directly to agencies for information or get referrals after assessment.

THE TRIAL Of LOUIS RIEL

The Trial of Louis Riel is the longest-running historical drama in North America.

Witness the trial of Louis Riel, an advocate for the Indigenous Peoples of Western Canada who faced charges of treason with the Government of Canada.

The Trial of Louis Riel was written as a Centennial project in 1967 by John Coulter and is based on the transcripts of the famous trial of Louis Riel in 1885 in Regina.

It is meant to help preserve and honour all Canadians and reenact part of Canadian history. See history brought to life!

Saskatchewan Heritage Fairs

Saskatchewan Heritage Fairs are a great hands-on way to learn about Canadian History!

Students do research about a project of their choice, and develop a display, or video, etc. to engage those who will see it.

There is a special Heritage Fair for High School Students.

Saskatchewan Heritage Fair goals:

  • create an environment where students are excited to learn and share;
  • provide recognition for student achievement;
  • celebrate cultural diversity and multiple perspectives;
  • reveal connections between the past and present; and
  • inspire Canadians to celebrate their place in history.

The Provincial Heritage Fair was held on Wednesday, June 14, at Government House in Regina.

The Virtual Heritage Fair projects will be viewable throughout the summer and early fall. Have fun seeing what students have learned about Canadian History!

Through interpretation, TIP volunteers assist clients to connect and access settlement-related services (i.e., Life Skills, Child Care Employment Services, Financial Services, Health Care Services, School Programs, Community Connections, etc.)

At the moment, interpreters for the following languages are needed:

Amharic, Arabic, Cantonese, Dari, French, Karen, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, Kurdish, Mandarin, Nepali, Pashto, Somali, Swahili, Tagalog, Tigrigna, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.

For more information about being a Volunteer Interpreter, and for an application, go to: https://rods.sk.ca/programs/settlement/tip/

TIP provides interpretation services in over 30 languages. For a list of available languages, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the Translation and Interpretation Program Coordinator directly at [email protected]
