Welcome to the Fenway Alliance's new Community Matters series where we spotlight our member institutions's community benefits!


As a consortium of 22 locally and globally renowned cultural and academic institutions, The Fenway Alliance and its members are committed to benefitting the local community and residents of Boston and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This newsletter provides an overview of some of those benefits made available to the community by each organization.


With offerings such as educational investments, job creation, and free community wellness courses, Northeastern University is the first member institution highlighted in this series.

2024 Community Wellness Series


Northeastern's Office of City and Community Engagement is sponsoring a Community Wellness Series this year. Sessions will be held throughout the year and cover subjects and activities such as yoga, nutrition, and financial literacy. All courses are free and open to the public with prior registration through their website.

Investments in Educational Achievement

Northeastern University has a longstanding commitment to creating educational opportunities for and ensuring the success of Boston's residents and Boston Public School students. To further this goal, Northeastern spearheads and participates in multiple programs and initiatives to set students up for success such as Foundation Year, Massachusetts Promise Fellowship (MPF), Balfour Academy, The Center for STEM Education, Lowell Institute School, Massachusetts STEM Week, Bridge to Calculus, United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Lighted Pathways and Ernest E. Just Programs, Sport in Society (SS) Program, The MacFarland Scholarship, Accelerate Pre-College Programs, Boston Public Schools Field Day, Boston Research Center Projects, and more.

Northeastern Youth Summer Jobs Program

Northeastern University's Summer Jobs program is offering 100 positions at their Boston campus for teens ages 14-18 in fields such as Administration, Marketing, Community Engagement, and more. They also have limited positions open for young adults ages 19-24 as peer Summer Leaders. Applications open March 1st, 2024.

The event brings BPS students to campus to watch and cheer on the women's basketball team as well as get a glimpse of university life.

Two-hundred and twenty-one students from Boston are entering Northeastern this year, of which 182 are graduates of Boston Public Schools.

Strengthening Neighborhood Connections

Northeastern University also serves the local community through facilitating events and programs aimed at uplifting families and providing enrichment opportunities. To this end, Northeastern has created or helps staff committees and initiatives to better serve the community including the Community Advisory Board (CAB), Community Service & Civic Engagement (CSCE) Office, Community Engaged Teaching and Research (CETR) Advisory Board, Northeastern Crossing's community workspace (book a classroom or conference room for FREE here), and various donations and drives throughout the year.

Boston Unity Cup at Northeastern kicks off global tournament and international celebration

The William E. Carter Playground on Northeastern's campus was reopened in 2018. The Carter Playground continues to remain open for reservations, and residents can visit the City's Parks and Recreation website for information on permitting, events, and more.

Fenway Cares + CCE Free Food Boxes

CCE and Fenway Cares have teamed up to do free food box deliveries for those struggling with food stability in the Fenway neighborhood. CCE packages bags at the Fenway Community Center and distributes them out to those community members unable to attend the in-person distribution that takes place every other Wednesday.

The program partners community members with Northeastern graduate students as a way to develop relationships and share experiences.

Creating Jobs and Supporting Business Development

In addition to employing over 1,400 Bostonians themselves, Northeastern is a significant contributor to small, minority- and women-owned local businesses. The University supports underrepresented businesses through a variety of means aside from monetary spending and have formed a number of associations and partnerships with external organizations. Additionally, Northeastern has also found ways to incorporate diverse suppliers into their contracts and expand opportunities for additional contracting to minority-, women-, and veteran-owned businesses.

Co-ops drive positive change in the neighborhoods—and create a pipeline for future nonprofit employee

Since 2021 Northeastern has funded Co-ops In Service to our Neighbors (CSN), which provides a paid, full-time co-op to 6 nonprofit partners.

Northeastern's Lab for Inclusive Entrepreneurship (IE) offers a 16-week online program - the IE Fellowship Program - for small business owners across New England to network and gain entrepreneurial mentoring. The Lab also offers consulting services and financial support to local businesses through student-faculty led projects.
