National Make-A-Will Month
|
|
Traditionally, people spend this month school shopping. However, August is also “National Make a Will” month and represents an incredible opportunity for you to increase your support for your favorite causes. Charities have limited budgets, and by naming them in your will you have a chance to support their mission for perpetuity.
There are many reasons to have a will. Wills can do more than just name who gets your money and property. With a will, you can also nominate guardians for your minor children, name caretakers for your pets, leave instructions for digital assets, write your funeral wishes, and more. A will can also save your loved ones the time, money, and stress that comes with lengthy, expensive probate court proceedings.
Step Up to Justice, a pro bono civil legal services organization, is a key partner in United Way’s End of Life Care Partnership that enhances the way we live by fundamentally changing the way we talk about death.
“The legal system can be complicated and difficult to navigate under the best of circumstances. Drafting a will prior to an emergency allows individuals the opportunity to educate themselves and offers the needed time to reflect before finalizing plans. But perhaps more importantly, a will provides a roadmap for your loved ones to follow and gives them the opportunity to honor your wishes.” - Michele Mirto, Executive Director/Attorney at Law Step Up to Justice
Only 30% of Americans have a will, which means your family will not get to make decisions for you if they are not written down. If you would like more information, please email Angy Shearer, Senior Director of Leadership Giving, at ashearer@unitedwaytucson.org.
